I found this link of the Free Kibble website, and thought some of you would enjoy seeing it:

www.peoplepets.com/photos/cute/interspecies-baby-love-animal-surrogates/1

It shows pictures of bitches (okay, and a hen) that have adopted the young of other species of animals.

WOW;  now sweet is that.  Is it that the shepherd cross bitch does not know other species; or is it that she is so kind and doesn't care what species it is just that it needed a mama to feed it.  Boy if that doesn't say it all.  Happy day girls.  Nan

The most amazing story of motherly nurturing is one I witnessed myself.

My neighbour had a barn cat that gave birth to 9 kittens. The mother's nearly grown kitten from a previous litter kept getting into the nest with the babies. Since she'd never had a litter, or even been in heat yet, my neighbour kept removing her from the nest.

Then she noticed the kittens seemed to be suckling from her. She pinched a nipple, and sure enough, she was producing milk!!

I guess somehow she knew her mamma needed help nursing such a large litter, and somehow the hormones kicked in to start her lactating!

A similar thing happened with the Rhodesian ridgeback female they show in the above slideshow.
