As I know we have a handful of top breeders on this sight from different countries i wanted to pose this question:

What Health testings does everyone complete before breeding?

I have seen some more than others in many venues not just GSD's and am just curious to what everyone tests for before breeding there GSD's.

Pro's and Con's of each test. % of accuracy of each- how many generation back are the tests conducted- etc.......

Just thought i would get soemthing constructive started for my and everyone else edification.

I think this is a great topic, and I would sure like to know! I believe OFA on Hips and Elbows is pretty standard for GSD's. And in most cases Brucellosis is done. I would love to hear others thoughts and knowledge on this matter.

I agree, Yoshy; good topic.  Axel's breeder is a veterinarian and here are the tests/checks she does:

Hips
Elbows
Thyroid
EPI
Fistulas
Brucella
Heart
Eyes
vWDz (Von Willebrand's Disease)
ANA (antinuclear antibody test for the autoimmune disease systemic lupus erythematosis)
Giardia

By the time my dogs are two years old, after being at the vet six to seven times and being x-rayed, I pretty much know the condition of their general health.
My vet is very thorough and I pay close attention to my dogs everyday.
Beyond the sire and dam that I own I can't say, other breeders do not like to share that much information most of the time.
I decide what I think about the dogs worth and if I want to breed a particular animal.
The only extra test I do is the Bruc test.

Keith:  Wow, I am impressed with your breeder and the choices that they choose to test for.  I can count on one hand the number of breeders checking eyes.  That scares me.  Just think if all breeders would test for everything your breeder tests for;  think what kind of health these dogs would be in,  the longevity we would have.  Wow, makes you think twice doesn't it.  Nan

I was impressed with her thoroughness as well and considering that Axel's breeding was an outcross as well, he should be a pretty healthy pup!  So far, so good!

I'm not really a "breeder," as I only produce a litter every three to four years, but I tested for hips, elbows, heart, eyes, thyroid, and a standard blood panel.

I just realized that the only thing anybody has asked me about, including the stud owner, was hips....

Keith, I think anyone would be hard pressed to find a breeder testing that thoroughly!

I have questions about eye tests, in particular, but will wait until this thread gets going to see if it's answered. I don't want to steer the subject in just one direction.  Great thread Yoshy!
