Are any of you familiar with kennels breeding working Giant Schnauzers in the United States? Seems  difficult to find the old working lines. Feel free to post if any of you have experience training this breed in Schutzhund .

I don't know if Montel specializes in "old working lines" - but Montel at Leading Edge Kennel does very well with his dogs...

I do not but there used to be a pair of them training at a club I worked with and they were great to watch go through the routines.

Ive worked with them in other venues (other than Schutzhund) and they did very well.  However the dogs I worked with were not so good around strangers and their coats required alot more care. At the time I lived in Wa State and all kinds of crap would end up in the coat and not the best for severe weather imo. I not sure what your plans are to take care of the coat but to maintain the wireyness, the coat is hand stripped and is EXPENSIVE.

Other than a schnauzer, have you considered a Bouvier? I just think Bouvs are so neat

Giant Schnauzer The Giant Schnauzer has the enamored temperament of a companion dog and has the assertiveness, boldness and drive of a guard or working dog. The Giant Schnauzer is both responsible and serious. He is protective of home and family, willing to defend his domain. This is a territorial dog with suspicion ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You may consider the Bouvier des Flandres The Bouvier des Flandres is known for being intelligent, protective, and strong willed. This herding dog likes to group and protect flocks. The Bouvier des Flandres are known for being devoted their family , and content when he is working. Long periods of time alone with out work, he become bored and behavior problems like barking, chasing, and chewing will follow

Coat wise, Wire dogs are a dream.  No shedding.  Or very little.

You pluck or stip comb them every so often.
I do mine about every 2-3 months.  Very little dog hair and thats a plus, all things being equal.

Pharaoh

I saw a gorgeous Giant Schnauzer at Menlo Park Schutzhund over a year ago.  He was pretty impressive.  Pharaoh was completely mesmerized and was doing the bark and hold along with him.  He was immitating the bark and pumping his front legs just like the Schnauzer.  I had to drag him away so as not to interefere with training.

Black Russian Terrier, Bouvier, Giant Schnauzer.

If I wanted a GS to do schutzhund with, I'd contact Armin Winkler--he has several very nice working schnauzers who are very strong dogs.
