Got a phone call at work last week about a stray German Shepherd that had been in a lady's yard for a week or two. The lady was afraid he was going to die out there. Not sure why she thought he would starve to death in her back yard, cause she could have fed him, right?!
I think we are going to name him Rico. Heartworm positive, intact male, maybe 3 years old. I can put my hand over his spine and feel kidneys, see every rib, and hip protuberances. ---- Mary

Lucky him for you getting him.  He's thin but hasn't lost the muscle mass like Tyson and Courage have - too bad he's heartworm positive.  That's one thing in Tyson's favor (he is negative) -

He looks terrified.  You have to wonder what they've been through, and you'd probably regret knowing.

I have 2 GSD females in right now that are skin and bones, trying to fatten up for adoption...I just don't understand people....grrrrr.
And remember the Mali girl, Lola, I had that was skin and bones??? At least she fattened up fairly fast...

His tail is not broken, just bony. He has a nice thick coat that is shedding out, and that does seem to hide some of the worst.
He is absolutely terrified. I had to find him in the lady's backyard, then try to catch him. Then try to get him through the briars, up the hill out of the yard, to my car. That was fun:(
He completely wigs out when you go to his head to put a leash on. That has improved already and he is walking on leash from the house to the kennel to potty. He even leaned against my leg this afternoon.
And no, I probably do not want to know what happened to him to make him the way he is.

Poor Rico. The look in his eyes is absolutely heartbreaking. He probably doesn't know it yet, but he is one lucky dog to have been rescued by you. God bless you for your loving and caring heart.

Where was he found? I mean what city State etc.?

by VomMarischal on 18 April 2010 - 23:04

This is why not one of my puppies will leave this house without a microchip. I know it's not a perfect system, but I'd sure like to know if you guys were finding my animals out there in this condition.
