I'm finding something rather amusing. I was used to living pretty far out where you had to drive to get anywhere. When I first came back from my "journey" and settled here, it was quite an adjustment. My other house was isolated so nobody really ever saw the dogs, unless on an outing. So. I move to a congested area (with only 1 of the 4 dogs) and find people who know me because of Drake! He goes into the bank with me and they love him. He's also welcomed at the "corner store" where he gets plenty of attention, and the people at the hardware store adore him. I was at the supermarket the other day and some guy searching through tomatoes said "You're the lady that walks the German Shepherd all the time!" A lady nearby says, "Yes, I see you every day!" They both start asking about Drake and commented how well behaved he is when we walk! It was quite a compliment! Then, yesterday, I pass a lady (we see her almost every day) who stops and says she's got a treat for him and she pulls out a HUGE dog biscuit! I thanked her but asked if it would be okay if I gave it to him once we got home because I'd rather he not be distracted. Really, I don't like to feed him "things" from other people, but the thought was sweet! There are also a number of apartment buildings we pass with many elderly people sitting out, and they all know him by name and call to him as we pass. I just didn't know I was "famous" in the neighborhood! Well, actually, it's Drake who's the local celebrity, I just happen to be on the other end of the lead!

I got that last year when I was down at the beach with my little girl.
There are a lot of dogs down at the time of year we go but they're mostly labs so a sable workingline shepherd was something of an oddity. Add to that her obedience and the way she'd play for hours at the waters edge with my son, I guess we were pretty distinctive.
I talked to more people, a walk on the beach would take hours because of people stopping to talk and I don't think I ever gave my name or asked theirs but we always knew heaps of information about our dogs when it was said and done!

Your dogs are celebrity and they are yours. Here it is rarely that people walk their dogs in busy streets or places, usually they take them to less populated parks. The sable shepherds are very rare here that very few realise they are GSDs, my puppies live at the farm which is in a rural area, the other day I brought my sable to the city for vet check and many of those who saw him stopped to ask what type he is and some gave very nice compliments and one girl gave her telephone in case I breed him in future.

I'm "famous" in my little town too because of the dogs. They are welcome in most of the businesses we go except the grocery store. My male has been in there--he likes the auto doors--he has also been in WalMart looking for me. All I have to do is say I'm the lady with the GSDs--oh we know who you are..................Especially because all my dogs are sable............

Yeah, I'm the "shepherd lady" at work, the "shepherd lady" at home, and I discovered a local GSD club who sometimes sends me clients refers to me as "that young girl". (At 30, I'm down with that!

Georgia can open the screen door, and sometimes goes on romps through the neighborhood before we catch her. Plus, I bike with her regularly and people always wave as we go by. When my husband took my kids trick-or-treating last Halloween, the neighbors around the corner from us had a goodie bag for Georgia too. She got some wonderful all-natural liver treats and was just in heaven. Other parents at my kids' school will ask if I'm that lady who rides the bike with the black dog. At least I'm not the crazy cat lady. :)

Opal I have a dog that can open the storm door really easy--I let her open the back one but I keep the front one latched. She has never tried to open it but ya never know.
Molly I've heard the wolf dog comment too. I was at the lake one day with my boy when he was young and a guy came up and told me it was illegal to own a wolf hybred--I told him Boba was an AKC GSD from European lines and he said I got screwed. LOL Whatever........
