My 14 month old Shepherd's hips make a popping noise when he walks. It's not a constant thing but it is noticeable. I can also feel them pop when they make the sound. He's not in any apparent pain. I haven't had him x-rayed yet; I'm contemplating whether to wait until he's two. Thoughts about the noise? I'm assuming it's not a good thing. Thanks in advance!

I had a male years ago same thing and when I ofa'd him at 2 he was good no problems so dont stress it and if you must know take him in and get an xray. How long before he is 2?

 Schaferhunden,

Yes, his sire's are OFA good and the dam's are a fast normal.

Well that is good news.

I would get a prelimanary done. I am not saying because of my experience he is ok just relating what happened when I had a male that had a popping in the hips as he aged the popping went away.

I would take him and get an xray even if you dont turn it in to OFA.

poppping noise is normally NOT a good sign - but no way to really tell without good quality straight x-rays.  I would do this.

I had a female who's hips were popping like that when she was young, but then it went away. She was x-rayed and got a-fast normal (a2) on her hips. Without the x-ray, you'll neve know!
