I want to have a Website someday. Is it best to put your Websites name in the dogs name?  Why do a lot of people put haus and hof on the end of their last name and name their websites that? Most people put vom and von in their dogs name, How do you decide witch one to use? Vom or Von? Thanks for any help.

von and vom both mean "from" or "of".

So Bodo von Lierberg is "Bodo of (or from) Lierberg

So no matter the kennel name, your dog is Dog name VON or VOM Kennel name.

You can use either.

"haus" means house.  So if your name was John Winter, your kennel could be Winterhaus, which simply means Winter's House.  If your dog's name was Snow he'd be Snow vom Winterhaus, or Snow from Winter's house.

Years ago I lived in the country, and I used Landhaus (country house) as a name for a pup who had no kennel name.  His name was Jonni so he was officially Jonni von der Landhaus, or Jonni from the country house.

Get it?

But I think in German Vom and Von are used with different nouns depending on whether they are masculine or feminine, someone who knows German may be able to explain more, but if I was picking a name with one of these I would ask a Geman speaker which sounds better with my kenel name, Von or Vom....otherwise it could sound wrong to people familiar with German....

Actually, I don't think it has to do with gender. VON is used by humans. Vom is appropriate for animals and inanimates. At least, that is my understanding. I could be wrong, as I do not speak German. :-) Check with one of the Germans or German-speakers for accuracy. Be SURE to check with a real German-speaker, because people have put together their own kennel names using dictionaries and come up with things that are laughably stupid to the Germans...or obscene. :-)

von der is used with feminine nouns, vom with masculine or neutrum nouns.  von der Landhaus is in effect not correct, Landhaus is neutrum, so it should be vom Landhaus.  vom is short for von dem, it all means the same from or of........  If you don't use an article, then it is a usually a name, as von Berlin  or von Haus Kind,   no article, von.

Is there anyone from germany on here that can confirm BEA's statement? The reason I ask is because we've all seen countless uses of von and vom for both male and female.  I doubt that Werner Hubner, a German, would have named his male BSP and WUSV champion" Asko VON DER Lutter"if it was a female designation. Along with many other great dogs from germany.

It has nothing to do with the gender of the dog, but the gender of the word used as a kennel name (in that case Lutter), all dogs from the same kennel have the same kennel name regardless if male or female, it seems for many English speakers this is a difficult concept as we do not have words of different gender (only first names). I would definitely check with someone German before using Von, von der or Vom to make sure you are using it correctly as many people just make it up and as Mystere says it could sound stupid.

I am German, and it depends on the gender of the noun following the "von"!   It does not have anything to do with the gender of the dog, in German, all nouns have a gender, as they do in French, Italian and Spanish, English is the only language that I know of in  which nouns have no gender.

If I wanted to put Haus before my name. Would it be Von or Vom. Example: Would it be  Von Haus  or  Vom Haus ?
Thanks for any help.
