Has anyone had trouble using a Schutzhund I dumbell during an AKC obedience Trial?  Friends of mine have used their SchI dumbell in the past while competing in OPEN, but during a match show the judge told me that we would no longer be able to use theSchI dumbell during a real trial.  Has anyone run into this issue and or has anyone trialed lately with AKC using a SchI dumbell.  We were told by another judge that it is up to the judge during the trial if we can use or not.

This is the rules according to AKC:

The dumbbell, which must be approved by the judge, will be made of
one or more solid pieces of wood or non-wooden material similar in
size, shape and weight to a wooden dumbbell. Metal dumbbells are not
permitted. Dumbbells will not be hollowed out. They may be unfinished,
coated with a clear finish or may be any color. They may not have decorations
or attachments but may bear an inconspicuous mark for
identification. The size of the dumbbell will be proportionate to the size
of the dog. The judge will require the dumbbell to be thrown again
before the dog is sent if it is thrown less than 20 feet, too far to one side
or too close to the ring’s edge.

I've always used a SchH1 dumbell and never had a judge tell me I couldn't use it.

I know people who've used them and gotten some offhand remarks, but I've never heard of anyone being told they couldn't use it. I just use a regular white plastic one for AKC, it really doesn't affect the dog's ability to pick up a SchH dumbbell, why rock the boat.

It took a long time to get Molly to retrieve the Sch I dumbell so if I don't have to introduce another type of dumbell at this point, I would prefer not to.  In the past I have tried an akc plastic dumbell and she has not showed as much interest to retrieve it. I am just so relieved that we are finally getting the retrieves down that I don't want to mess with a good thing. I think I will purchase a wooden akc dumbell as at least it will be made of the same material and will use it if the judge does not allow us to use the SchI dumbell.
