I acknowledge that a dog can live on what's available, and dependent upon his genetics and other environmental factors, appear to be thriving, but I don't understand why they should have to.

Rik: Exactly, this it what I have said all along, including a couple times in this thread. Most dogs can thrive on foods, even those poor foods with very low nutritional value, so for the kibble companies to come along and tell people they better feed kibble because canine nutrition is far too difficult for the average person to figure out for themselves is nothing but condescending propaganda scare tactics and a bunch of baloney meant to convince the general public they better stick with kibble. They are profit driven companies and the bottom line is they will say whatever they can get away with to keep those profits up. Nothing wrong with that, but we must recognize the dance, which means we don't necessarily have to swallow or accept what they try to informationally force feed us as the gospel, either.
I don't think anyone doubts a dog can live on and some can even thrive on even the lower quality foods, in fact I said it more than once. For me, it's not a question of whether or not a dog can thrive on kibble, I prefer to feed whole foods, fresh ingredients, common sense tells me it's better. I might be wrong, I might be right, but as you said, and I wholeheartedly agree, dogs are made to thrive on very little, if you look at it that way, either way I am not hurting my dog by feeding raw anymore than you are hurting your dog by feeding him kibble.

I think a lot of the hype is on demand sometimes. Because honestly there is no way for anyone or public polling to varify factfully who feeds raw to their dogs.
It simple to research manufactured dog foods and come to the conclusion what a majority of the dog population thrives on commercially.
It's not like raw fed dogs show up at the local vets for ailments and illness often.
Good post Sue.

There is also a big difference in feeding a RAW diet and feeding a NATURAL diet.

This is ridiculous statement. Of course dogs fed anything and everything become ill and have ailments. It is fine if someone believes raw is better. It is something else to make claims that cannot be substantiated and are simply not true.

To be perfectly clear and hopefully not beating this poor dead horse into oblivion:
I think feeding a commercial kibble is fine, I think feeding raw is fine, do what you want, feed what you want, and don't make claims that aren't true. Dogs really can do well on either diet or a combination of diets. Just don't let the idiots convince you that you aren't smart enough to figure it out for yourself....that is all.

i went to a raw diet, because after i tried it, my dogs coat had the "glow of angle wings" and they walked on water.
