Hans spoken like a true man who makes his money selling dogs. Big over charged prices do not make a good dog, here, there or anywhere. A dog is like anything else its only worth what some poor guy or gal will pay. Hans its your business so sell them...When buying from anyone it is best to "buyer beware" and all of us should do there homework. It cost far less to travel to Europe and test some dogs and pick what you want, than pay an inflated price here, in the long run it will be money saved and a dog you have tested and picked...

GSDPACK
He is just trying to get a rise out of me. He could not even pay for the airfare with what I get for my service.
Let me ask you Copdogs. When you are buying a car do you go to Japan or Germany or Korea or where ever you buy a car if it's not US made and save money? And then what if something go wrong with your car do you take it for warranty repair to their country of origin?
I can not wait for your smartoholic answer. Like:" I buy only American." Or something like taht.

Hans, lol I buy the car I think is the best $ value with quality and service. I am not loyal to any brand I have a new Suburban >Chevy, a Ford Truck, and my wife's Drives a Toyota Avalon. So no I buy what i think suits my needs. No at this time I have a Malinois from Belgium, a German Shepherd from Germany. Again Hans you are speaking from an importer who makes a living from dogs. Anyone who has been in Schutzhund or police K(s for any time has made friends in Europe and can , if they want get a fair deal on a dog. Period....I am not knocking you or what you do There are tons of guys from Czech selling dogs to America making  lots of money, some good dogs some terrible just like from any country. They are making more off of 1 dog a lot of times than they would if they worked for 6 months..its your job to make what ever you make selling a dog, just like its my job to get the dog I want tor the money I want to spend or continue looking,,

So you did not go buy your Toyota in in Japan. Right?
You say :
Anyone who has been in Schutzhund or police K(s for any time has made friends in Europe and can, if they want get a fair deal on a dog. Period...

Period nothing!!!
That is my point exactly. Not very many people have friends in Europe; not  even amongst Police K9s and SchH people. Some do. But I am talking about the ones who don't.
Also I would like to ask you where have you got the impression that people who import 1 dog make more profit then some people working 6 mo. You are definitely not talking about me or any other reputable  importers I know. Yes there are some who import dogs for Steven Seagal and other people who are not happy unless they spend the big bucks. That is often once in a life time proposition. That gives them bragging rights for a while. Unfortunately there are not very many such rich people like that.
I have lived under the tree in 40*F -50*F minus(!!!) for several months in Wyoming , and in the warehouse style unheated  training place, and then in unfinished shell of a house and  for many years in a trailer with eventually no windows or doors,...  like  a bum . Then I rented shitty tiny house for a few years. Now finally 3 years ago when I was 54 years I could afford with my better half  to buy a nice house with small down payment.  I fix my own trucks and drive them to death and clean dog shit every day by myself with Debbie. No other help.  Until recently I had to keep another job. Like carpenter, chairlift operator, hired trainer for other kennels, or be  firewood logging. I also worked as a surveyor.  So I do not know where are you getting your info, but you should reconsider your sources. They suck.  For me this is a purely labor of love and I am blessed that I do for living what I love. If I would do it just for money I would  have to be totally insane.

Yes many importers/brokers are crooks.......but not all of them are. You can do one of 2 or 3 things.  Have them ship the dog to you (you pay shipping (at least 800 to 1000 bucks)  Pay the health certificate and crate (400 bucks) and join the thousands of americans with a expensive three legged mongoose!!!!   Or you can fly there for 900 bucks.rent a car for 300...get a hotel for 300...spend 300 to 500 on food expenses...drinks and strip club..use your knowledge as a begginer to test the dog.and pay for shipping back.....and join the thousands of americans with an expensive three legged mongoose.  OR, pay the measly 3000 dollars and have a REPUTABLE importer/broker bring the dog in.  I would make the trip...just to go to the strip clubs..but thats me....peace and hair grease.....and the cowboys still suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   d

The question isn't how much is it worth to import a dog. The question is, essentially, how much of a commission should a broker get?

If the dog, direct from the breeder, is (for example) $5000 and the same dog is available from a broker for $8000... do you think that's a reasonable surcharge?

I think you have to ask yourself what value the broker adds. Is he checking the dog out personally? Viewing the dog or having it evaluated by someone he considers knowledgeable and reliable. Is he translating or facilitating communications or paperwork transfers or shipping?

In this case, if I were the original poster, I think I'd contact the broker and ask *him* what value he brings and if you want to deal with him, ask him to reduce his cut of the price.

If I am dealing with a broker, I expect him/her to get something out of the sale. But I also expect that the broker to be more than just a re-seller lining his pockets with a 60% commission.

The broker hasn't seen the dog, is fairly new to the business, and does not he offer good warranty like Prager.  I don't think he is worth the 3000.

When I asked the original question, I did not think about the fact that a broker would take a commision.

The first thing that popped into my head when I saw the price difference was, the person in Slovakia stole the info from the broker's web and put it on his own website in order to "sell" the cheap dog to a naive person and then run away with the money or send a different dog.

I trust the person in Slovakia more after talking to his references, seeing videos of the dog, etc.

Thank you
