Some may remember Grimm von der Heidmark. A fabulous dog whose career was cut short by a broken neck at a trial. He was caught badly and he really hit hard.
He survived the surgery and trialled on. He was not bred to as many females as he deserved. I was fortunate to own one of his granddaughters.
He had the kind of looks that people seek in the DDR dogs.

I remember Grimm. He had surgery to have the damaged discs fused at UC Davis, went on to compete in the Nationals in Kentucky with Gene England.

Well, the September trial is cancelled anyhow. There'll be one in October that I'll announce later on.

Actually VM, I don't know anyone who trains the routine over and over in schutzhund. Pretty much just before a trial is it. We work on different stuff at different times. For example, we don't walk the pattern day in and day out in heeling and we don't work protection the same as a trial either. After all, the last thing in the world we would want is our dogs anticipating commands.
4Pack the BH really has very little to do with schutzhund, and everything to do with politics. It's a temperament test and very basic obedience test, nothing more. So who cares whether or not it's easy?
All this "my sport's better than your sport" nonsense is crap. I have watched PSA trials on videos and watched some teams who are training in PSA, but it's not my sport, I don't do it myself, so the last thing I'm gonna do is criticize something I don't fully understand. The one thing I do know for sure is all the grip sports have their strengths and weaknesses. Enjoy whatever sports you choose and don't worry about the others.

IMO this is the biggest problem PSA has right now. Not just a lack of trials, but it seems that many trials are cancelled just a few weeks from the trial date. I've watched PSA since it started, and competed in it a few times. I enjoy the sport, and would play in it more, but there are rarely trials to compete in anymore, and when one is scheduled it seems like it's always cancelled. At least here in the West. Since FR is my main sport, I do have to do some cross training to prep a dog for PSA, but the last few times I spent the time to cross train, the trials I was hoping to attend were cancelled.
Since these were the Regionals that were cancelled, will the trial in Oct be the regionals instead?

No. Nobody (ok 6 people) signed up for the regionals in the West. They will carry on as normal everywhere else in the country, just not here. We won't have one. This really bothers me because my girl is 7.5 years old (just got into the sport in the last year) and it was probably her one and only chance to get to any regionals. Oh well. Just one more example of why the best dogs don't always have the best titles, eh? Not that I'm saying my dog is the best dog but she's darn good, and now her titles will be hum-drum.
The trial in Oct. will just be a trial, but a fun one with an Oktoberfest theme.

malndobe,
People advertise a trial and when no one shows interest or pre pays entry fees to show support, the trials cancel. Who wants to shell out a couple grand, to fly a judge and decoys out just so our own club entrees can trial? My TD and his wife just did this in June. They are willing to do it again but it would be nice if a few other people came to trial and support the sport. Trialing against our own club dogs sucks. Some real competition would be awesome. People in Oregon cancelled theirs and many of us planned to go trial there. Do they bother to come here instead? Doesn't sound like they planned to.
Trials and clubs are going strong back east but here in the west, it is a dry spell. Probably the economy.
Sue, I f-inmg hate politics! I hate drama, I just wan to have fun with my dogs.

Although I understand the issues, this is what FR clubs have done for years. Heck, a few years ago I hosted a trial on my own, out of my own pocket, just so I could have a chance to compete since there weren't plans for any other trials in the area at the time. FR has a 6 dog minimum for a trial to be legal, but as long as there will be enough entries for a legal trial, the trial goes on. Many (most?) times the club loses money, but that's just part of hosting a trial and promoting the sport. That's one of the things we pay club dues for, so there is money in the account to host events.
What I have seen happen in FR is that when the trials do go on, even with smaller entries, then the people in the area are more likely to commit to the next trial. When it becomes a habit for the event to be cancelled, people start assuming that's what is going to happen, and don't commit to preparing. That's why I quit cross training my dogs. Well, I still cross train my dogs, but not with any specific sport in mind, where as before we specifically practiced PSA exercises in addition to other stuff.

Competition is nice, but so is the chance to trial and title the dogs. In my experience, once the competitions happen on a semi-regular basis, the competitors start to come.

It's my understanding the people in Oregon cancelled their trial because the judge cancelled on them at the last minute, not because they wanted to cancel or didn't have enough entries.
Do they bother to come here instead? Doesn't sound like they planned to.
I don't know what they did or did not plan, I'm not "in" with that club other then knowing someone who trains there.
I'm probably "preaching to the choir", but oh well :-)
PSA was strong here for a long time, but now it's going through some of the same stages FR has gone through. Actually I think it has always been going through those stages, for as long as I've been involved in FR (getting close to 20 years now) it's kind of "traveled" around the US in terms of what areas it's strong in, and what area's it's weaker in. When I first got involved the PNW was a hotbed for FR, then it was dead for a long time, now it's starting to pick up again. When I moved to CA there wasn't much going on, now it's one of the strongest areas in the country for FR. And the thing that seems to make an area grow the most is trials. People won't stay in a sport long, or consider crossing over to a sport, if they see they can't compete. Sucks, but its true.

I hope PSA picks up for you guys out west. Do any of you guys plan on coming to the Nationals in Ohio?
I will be at Sweetcorn's event this Saturday, hopefully we will have a nice turn out.

Hunter, I'm seriously thinking about it.
