There is also a chance of whipworm and damage to the pancreas, resulting in malabsorption. If the stools are runny and leave a greasy ring when placed on brown paper, that's a good indicator. Nothing can really be done about this, BTW.. They cannot benefit from added calories in the form of fat.. They are unable to digest fats. Enzymes (Rx) may help for awhile, but very expensive and won't help much.
My first suspicion is that this is the result of a behvioral disorder.

One more thought.. It's a shame in a big way to cull and deselect these dogs from the gene pool, because this running behavior ("Laufwillen") reflects the kind of behavior which was so useful in the herding of sheep, as done in the earlier days of the breed in Germany ("Continental" or "tending" style herding). Buy Ed Frawley's tape on herding dog training and you will understand more. NOT the one on herding trials.. the one on herding training.
It's amazing that you are still able to learn something after so many years, but I was a good twenty years into the breed before I really understood this kind of behavior and where it comes from. There is a reference in some of the old books on the early breed in the USA, that one of the founding sires was not doing well in the kennel. I'm sure this is why. US / AKC breeders, for whatever you may think of them, at least understand that this is a HERDING breed, first and foremost.
Buy the tape and you will understand what is meant by "Laufwillen". Unfortuneately, it causes a lot of problems with GSDs, as kennel dogs. The really extreme ones don't even do well in private homes. It doesn't matter how you raise them, or how big or small a yard you give them. They will express this behavior obsessively, if they have inherited an extreme level of this running / herding behavior.

A school of red herring just swam by...
I look forward to hearing any updates about the dog. I hope everything turns out ok for him.

DDR-DSH - you don't know anything about this dog. From pictures of him standing there wagging his tail and holding a ball, you have judged him to have a behavioral problem? I'll just cut this short and tell you to get real. You know nothing about this dog, he is a super nice young dog with no temperament or "behavior problems". He either has a health problem, which I will find out in a day or two, or he was starved. Simple as that. He will gain weight and become the lovely dog he is supposed to be, and someone will be very lucky to adopt him.

Hey Molly, God bless you for taking in this dog. People like you are true earth angels. Our two current dogs are rescues and if it hadn't been for people like you, right now we wouldn't have two of the most wonderful dogs we've ever had. I hope and pray Tyson ends up in the wonderful, loving forever home that he deserves. Thank you! Thank you! Char

OK.. Have it your own way.. I know nuthin', as usual. LOL
By the way.. Did anyone see the threads on the "Sock Puppet"? The one who was hurling shit at me? Along with BAZAA, his clone sock puppet? I completely outed and exposed this scam for what it was, AR activists, posing as members of the dog community, and trying to whip up a lynch mob, just generally trying to lead / control the dialogue in their direction.
Interestingly, those threads have ALL disappeared, now. But, "sock puppets" are magical creatures, like internet gremlins, able to do these things. So, "POOF"!!!! All gone!
I challenge you guys to go to the Wikipedia site and look up "sock puppet". You will see what this is really all about.. one or two people, trying to appear as multiple people, creating a big stir over anything they want to.. and stupid people fall for it. Unbelievable!
I TOLD you all that this site was infested with animal rights activists.. I guess I don't know anything about that, either? OK.. I'm going to leave the experts alone to their expertise.. And when you've found a home for that one, now I will know who to refer people to in your area.
By the way.. WATCH OUT with rescue activities.. NOT just breeding.. Animal rescue and humane stuff is it's own industry. You do too much, and they see you as competition. Then they will try to come in and close you down. I know someone it happened to because her cat rescue was getting too successful. Competition.. It comes in strange forms, no?

Sock puppets are a scam! Read it and hang your heads in shame.. You have all been scammed!!!! You have NO idea who most of these people are, posting on this forum, and in many cases they are the same person, an animal rights activist who is always online, because he gets PAID to do this! Probably a PeTA or HSUS shill.. You have been warned!
