Pharaoh

Just to be open minded, I clicked on the link to the discussion on raw diet at vet.info by vet Mike.

It was hilarious and uninformed.  Presented by people who think "special" diets by Science Diet are necessary for so many, millions of dogs.  Nice pelletized corn, now that is something "special".  What is special is that they can enter the digestive tract and come out the other end with a perfectly formed pelletized poo poo.  The dogs system may be sick and tortured, but the engineered pellet is designed to come out the other end as a perfectly formed pelletized poo, no matter what......kind of like cement.

It is not my concern what other people feed their dogs.  It is not my place to judge them and I would appreciate it if the pellet feeders did not send us to pious know-nothings for information.

Pellets are not all the same.  Some are much better than others.

Pharaoh eats 1 cup soaked Origen Regional Red top dressed with 1 pound of defrosted GreenTripe.com XKALIBER: Green Tripe, Muscle Meat, Heart, Tongue, Trachea/Gullet and Ground Bone once or twice a week.

The other meals are 1/2 5 lb chicken with 1/2 can of sardines packed in water split into two meals.  Sometimes I throw in a raw egg yolk,  For Christmas he got a couple of pounds of chicken feet.  I add 3-4 feet (pointy toe nails clipped) to his feed when I have them.

Sometimes, the local store has smallish turkey necks, gizzards and miscellaneous parts for sale.  Pharaoh just loves it.  He can eat the same thing every day with gusto.

I feed leg quarter in the morning. At nite I feed 4oz. of heart, pigtails, turkey tails, beef cheeks, beef tongue and kidney. I finally stop being so lazy and have prepared bags for each day. They have 20 oz. in each so some have no pigtails some have no tongue to make sure each are 20 oz. I have salmon fish heads that are frozen for months now that I feed once a month. I purchased 9 heads in October 1st once used at the beginning of december next once next week.

phaedra
Is there a Pet Food Express pet store somewhere near you? If so they do have a freezer that has prepared raw diets.... They have Natures Variety, Primal and one other brand that I dont remember the name of. I am sure you could also order directly from the companies.

Michele,
So you switched Pharaoh to Origen from TOTW? Does he like it better? I remember you saying that he didnt do good with salmon oil. I know Origen has salmon oil in it.

I have thought about feeding a raw diet to my dogs but havent jumped over the fense yet, so to speak. I know there are alot of recipies for raw. I wasnt sure what one to do. I thought about feeding the prepared raw diets, such as Primal or Omas Pride. What do you all think about the prepared raw diets??

by phaedra on 28 December 2010 - 02:12

Phaedra, can your dog eat turkey? Do you have a source for Oma's Pride or Bravo?

I don't know if he can have turkey. He's just 4 months old, and the only thing I know he can't have is chicken. He has had a very bad reaction to it from multiple sources, in even tiny amounts.
Because he is so young, I'd rather not fart around with testing out what he can and can't have. Right now he is doing great with TOTW Lamb, so theoretically, he could probably do ok on raw lamb or goat. However, that's not cheap, and it would be very hard to get a balanced diet I think. I don't know if he would even be able to tolerate organ meats from chickens, and I would need a serious grinder to get him any kind of decent amount of bone out of goat or lamb.

I live in BC, in a very small town. The only prepared raw frozen food available is:

www.petsgoraw.ca/Products.html

Since he can't have chicken, (and I don't know about turkey), the beef one is $21.99 for 5lbs, and elk is $36.99 for 5lbs (!!!)

Ask an expert.  Dr. Susan Lauten has her PhD in Biomedical Sciences and her master's degree in animal nutrition.  Here is her web site:  http://www.petnutritionconsulting.com/.   Click on the "contact" page and email her your questions--she will respond, free of charge, but it takes awhile to hear back from her.

Pharaoh

by Pharaoh on 29 December 2010 - 03:12

Jyl,

Pharaoh only gets kibble twice a week, 1 - 1 1/2 cups at at time depending on how much exercise he gets.  I think he may have invisible wings or spring loaded legs, he can jump a 5 1/2-6 foot fence without a sound.  Oh well, I guess my next big expense will be a doggie jail kennel.

It was salmon oil that I think is not so good.  Fish meal is fine.  I ordered some sardine/anchovy oil-should arrive soon.

The TOTW was ok.  The chicken is the only one that doesn't have flax and I wanted a red meat kibble to combine with tripe.  Origen Regional Red sounded like a good combination with the GreenTrip.com Excalibur mix.  It is hideously expensive but I only use at the most, three cups a week.  So, I buy it in 15 lb bags.

INGREDIENTS

Fresh deboned wild boar*, fresh deboned lamb*, fresh beef liver*, fresh deboned pork*, lamb meal, peas, salmon meal, russet potato, herring meal, fresh whole eggs*, fresh deboned bison*, potato starch, fresh deboned salmon*, pacific whitefish meal, fresh deboned walleye*, salmon oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols), sun-cured alfalfa, pea fiber, dried organic kelp, pumpkin, chicory root, carrots, spinach, turnip greens, apples, cranberries, blueberries, licorice root, angelica root, fenugreek, marigold flowers, sweet fennel, peppermint leaf, chamomile, dandelion, summer savory, rosemary, vitamin A, vitamin D3, vitamin E, niacin, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, d-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12, zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, selenium yeast, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Enterococcus faecium.

I will let you know, it has only been a few weeks on the Regional Red.

Michele
