Gravel is a cheap alternative to concrete, however, if  your dog has diarrhea on it, it's difficult to clean. I certainly wouldn't recommend it if you show a lot, and have dogs that might pick up contagious diseases, or if you are going to run a boarding kennel where sanitation is very important.

It does eliminate the problem of muddy feet. However, I have a couple of determined diggers, and they will still dig in pea gravel.
