Retrieving 2 Kg rubber discuses 40 - 50 meters each way 50 times every day.  That way, I throw a lot more and don't burn any more calories walking than I have to.

Makes it possible to go anywhere, anytime of day or night.  I consider that a job, too.

Current 16 month male is in training to be Police service dog. Have bred 7 dogs in past 5 years that are active PSD. My 7 month female is currently in training for herding. 5 year old male: he is the watchdog of the property, who needs a doorbell? He also makes sure that every food bowl is emtied and cleaned properly, as well as every piece of food that had been dropped is taken care off immediately.

2.5 year old girl: she is the peacemaker between 4 dogs, she thinks her job is to keep the pack together, setting boundaries and fetching the escapies (oh yeah, she is from strong herding lines) She is also helping out in the yard and garden by digging out stones that could be caught in the lawn tractor. She is a therapy dog.

10 month old male: his job is to make sure that moma doesnt forget the ever so important cuzz words, besides he works as alarm clock by showing his howling abilities at 8 am. He also makes sure that all the balls are put to good use and the repair tools are never really put away.

2 are doing AKC obedience. All 3 are supporting my ego, let me forget my pain and keep me moving. Yeah, I left the schutzhund part out ;)

Two Moons

by Two Moons on 15 April 2010 - 02:04

My dogs being of mixed lines have a variety of tasks to perform each day.

The day shift spends most of their time excavating and doing minor landscaping around the property, debris sorting and redistribution also a major chore that gets done everyday.

Break time and meals require some laying around and sometimes sleep.

Once per day weather permitting they each have one on one time, be it training or play this usually involves a ride in a vehicle and an open window, slobbering and some barking.

Once per day they also have a group outing together either going into the woods alone or following me around the yard doing my chores.

The night shift is split between guarding property from small game and warming the end of my bed, they take turns between indoor and outdoor duty.

The highlight of any day is a visit by the Brown truck, and chasing off the neighbors dogs and cats, rides and swimming, some agility, retrieving and tug o war, and we dabble at tracking.
Sometimes they just like to fight and wrestle.

Chasing anything is pure Ecstasy, barking an art, and begging, demanding, and ignoring a way of life.

Their real job is to just be here with me, everything else is gravy.

Moons.

All excellent replies, However a few PM have asked me why i have excluded the ScH sport when that is my primary interest with my Dogs now
Well as you know i say it as it is and the only reason i bought that up not to be mentioned is that a fair few on here are if the Sport is bought up reminding us that ScH is not the be all and end all of testing this breed of Dogs, But they are telling us something we all know,
But if that is what you do with your Dogs then that is what you talk about well in my case it is, I have had other Breeds do the Herding bit etc and the Training for Guide Dogs a long time ago, but for me and the way i live i for one do not need a protection Dog or do i have the time or room now to train dogs for other outlets ,
However saying that only two days ago I had Pigeon Visitors from the UK, Goran and Izzy were being a bit vocal seeing the friends were in the Garden , So i put Goran in the Dog Trailer for 14 minutes However they were off home a about 10 minutes later and we stopped to talk about a yard from where Goran was in the Box he could see us standing talking another friend came over a little quickly to shake my hand as he wanted to be away to get to his booked place on the channel tunnel, and he approached quickly Goran banged against the Bars with his teeth showing and he was snarling I guess he thought maybe the Guy was coming for me
However to get back to the point, I knew that if Sch was mentioned it would maybe turn the thread sour and why do i say that well, i post some 9 hours different to most of you and when i finally catch up there are a huge amount of posts on a thread and even if you read them all somethings get lost along the way for no ones brain can take in a huge amount of postings in one go and if you reply and it is taken in the wrong context then sparks fly
That is why i wanted to see if we could all post without any friction at all and this has gone okay, Now we know what many do with there dogs, Some do a fair bit others not too much However it is up to them and it is after all what makes them happy, It does not retract anything from Dogs or owners the main thing is that our Dogs are happy and well cared for, and if they are happy in the work they do or not as the case is then this thread was worth putting on just to get the peoples thoughts on what they do
There is still time for many who post on here have not said what they do with there Dogs

My collie alerts to low/high blood sugar and responds whenever a certain family member with PTSD has an episode. I could call her a service dog, but I don't, because she has horrible nerves and can't be taken into public places with slick floors or loud noises. She does work though :)

My GSD is a deterrent with basic OB who will, as we have discovered recently , defend against a threat. He's a one woman dog and goes with me on long trips. I feel very safe with him in the car and hotel room. He's also found narcotics multiple times. They were hidden inside trees on public property ...he's not trained for that (we don't think??)....we really don't understand why he keeps finding the drugs.

A very good thread, steve1. I do like to hear your stories about Goran and Izzy.

4pack

Besides the protection sport stuff...my dogs do various little odd jobs around the house, at the park or the ranch. These jobs are always changing and growing with my needs or wants, sometimes I just see a potential to stimulate the dogs brain and make something up, like pick up sticks or gimme that. I have my dogs bring me different items I point at and name. They do a little herding, keep the cows from bumrushing me in the fields, hunt up ducks, quail and squirell, watch my back on hikes, I have yet to see a snake when my dogs are with me. One goes with me shopping after dark and guards the car. The other has proven the best way to get my housecat back inside, when he books out the door. Both are property sentry, alarm systems and guardians. Lived various places my adult life and never been ripped off or broken into.

Each dog I've had shows his best potential in different areas and I have them apply their skills as best they can. I have had good babysitters, hunter/retrievers, jogging buddies and more than I can remember in past GSD's. The 2 I have now are mostly sport/protection, 1 is more duffus than anything, he's still young. Right now they are both my prenatal excersize "excusses" getting me off my tired butt a few times a day, to walk and throw a ball a million times.

I have only one right now, (and 2 aussies for comic relief:)  She just turned 2 and we are hoping to get into tracking since she seems to love it:)  Rally as well. Obedience maybe.  Herding would be a possibility.  There isnt alot available in my area.

For right now, she is my constant companion, swimming, hiking alot, keeping the bugs out of the yard:) , lots of tugging, keeping the aussies in line and finding things I've lost. She costs me a fortune in frisbees.

She's also one big bed hog at nite:))

I have two dogs; a male ESS who is 10 and a female GSD turning 3 very soon.  Both are my companion dogs and loves nothing more than outdoor activities.  They sleep most times at home, thankgoodness.  As she is my first GSD, she is an excellent example as my learning pad and I mean the good, the bad and the ugly.  I do alot of obedience to keep in check and they both keep me fit ;)
