don't be too judgemental until you have spent time working and/or volunteering at a local county animal shelter and been involved in the euthanasia of thousands perfectly healthy dogs.
I worked at an animal shelter as a staff vet for two years, it was really eye opening,
the early spay neuter is targeted at irresponsible pet owners, and early spay neuter before hormones kick in does help keep more pets in the home and out of the shelter, and keeps them from having more unwanted and uncared for litters.
I do not believe it should be forced on people, they need to be educated about it and then make the choice for themselves.
Personally I have not seen any negative effects that can be attributed to early spay/neuter, and I routinely do spay/ neuter at 12 weeks to 6 months of age.
You guys should not bash vets so much on here, some of us actually care and are good at what we do.

Just my experience:
After my female's botched spay at 6 months, and resulting urinary tract issues, I can honestly say I wish I had never spayed her. Her conformation is also very "off" in my opinion, in comparison to other collies of similar bloodlines. It was strongly pushed at me (along with Science Diet...), cost $500 (they never suitably explained THAT figure), and she was in terrible pain afterward.

if the dog is of good quality, trained and competes - no hurry.
