I've always taught my dogs to do all their commands on all kinds of objects: benches, chairs, garbage cans, rocks, window ledges, you name it. It's loads of fun.

It helps the dog understand the proper mechanics of the positions, and how to go about *changing* positions.
Because it is on the bench, it can't flop onto the hip.
Because it is on the bench, it has to down straight, without turning or fidgeting.
Because it is on the bench, it learns that it doesn't move its rear feet during any of the position changes, only the front.

If you work them that way from the very begining, they learn the proper body mechanics before anything else, and it becomes muscle memory to them- they never learn how to do it wrong.

Well, on stand, it helps teach a dog a "kick back" stand in which they do NOT move their front legs, which is what I prefer, so the dog does not end up ahead of the heel position if asked to stand from a sit or down.

It's also great for coordination and confidence building!

KC, you got me, lol.  My terminology sucked.  I should have said, they don't take a step, rather than they don't move their feet.

And ditto the coordination and confidence building.
Ladder walking is good for that too- I wish I had started that earlier as well.

Teaching a dog to walk the ladder:

When he was a puppy, I definitely would've worked on the recall (particularly under distraction), his focus and making training more fun for him and me. Although I learn more every day (mostly from him!), the words come to mind: 'Man, if I knew then what I know now..." I swear I could just kick my own ass! He has such great potential; it's a case of a problem handler not a problem dog!
