Just as an aside: the shelter I worked at had owners sign a statement stating everyone (adult wise) in the family knew the dog was being turned over to the shelter and faced very probable euthanasia (we couldn't keep but a small fractionof the "owner release" dogs/cats we got each day. It was a good move, let me tell you - because grieving spouse LOVES to scream at crowded animal shelter and this way we got them to redirect where it needed to be directed.
