I never met Danny and haven't been a member of WDA for some time but I did communicate with him for a while about forming a WDA club and have a lot of like and respect for him.
From someone on the sidelines it seems like he went into WDA with the idea of making some changes, and he did. In my opinion they were changes that were long over due.
He always seemed to try and get input from the membership and was open to ideas.
So if we got tired of fighting the fight and maybe, just maybe, thought he was fighting alone, and resigned I'm not going to fault him. Personally I appreciate a resignation letter that speaks to the truth and doesn't go blah blah blah personal reasons, blah blah blah.........
Best wishes to you Danny!

Danny's resignation is certainly a blow to the WDA . Mr. Sprieitler has conducted himself in a very professional manner and I believe he truly had the best interest of the breed. The GSDCA never appreciated the WDA for what it stands for: the German Shepherd STANDARD!
I have been around for many years and have seen the transformation of a once regal animal into a spindly, snippy, hock walker (and I could go on and on). The only thing I ever hear about is 'side gait'. And believe me I have seen many, many American conformation shows.
At one point we tried to introduce some very nice German dogs into our American conformation show. It was awful. The crowd made fun of our dogs and handlers. Real sportsmanship, right?
The parent club has been self serving for years. I have not belonged to it for a very long time. It is as corrupt as the USa club.
Please don't attack me for my feelings. Of course not ALL American dogs fall into that category, but this is what the 'top' American breeders strive for.
I can't even imagine what Danny has had to endure from the old farts at the GSDCA. I am just sorry they finally wore him down. I for one will miss him.
Pat
PS My friend, Karen, just called and said she thinks the conformation shows here in the US should have the GERMAN SHEPHERD STANDAND as a back drop so the American judges can be reminde\d what the standard is really about.

While I am not a WDA member, I am sorry to see Danny resign..........
However, much credit must be given to Danny and his team, for the growth, in all aspects, of the Club.
I am pretty sure it was a substantial and constant battle with those people "above" to get things done.
He was always available to anyone, member or non member, to answer questions, which many "leaders" could
learn from!
I don't think you can change the GSDCA, they will stick with their NON FCI Standard GSD, but I think steady growth
within WDA will give them more bargaining power.
All the best to you Danny!!!!!!!!

I don't want this to be a "history lesson" but I will attempt to clarify some of the above questions. The GSDCA created the WDA many years ago to help those that wanted to work their dogs in schutzhund. Remember, the AKC did not allow any events in which dogs were encouraged to bite. Thus several members of the GSDCA formed the WDA. The standards that people refer to are almost the same. Over the years the breeders, in the USA and in Europe, have developed what I call a different style from each other. I am not defending, nor praising either style. The bashing of OUR breed is not constructive and does not benefit either organization. The "import" is slowly being used by many breeders in the US and needs to be .
The resignation of Danny was indeed a surprise, but bashing the GSDCA and other WDA board members is very disconcerting to me. I have belonged to the GSDCA since 1978 and also belong to the WDA and now serve on the board of the WDA. I own American lines and imports. Yes, they are different from each other, but everyone looks like a German Shepherd Dog. We need to be more tolerant of each other and discuss, without hate and malice, how to improve our breed. This is not about people and power, this is about our breed and it is only one breed ,The German Shepherd Dog.
For those who do not know me personally, I have American lines and two Sch H III and one Sch H I dogs. I've bred and owned many AKC Champions and will continue to strive for a better dog in my breedings.
If you aren't constructive, you are destructive.

There already was a schutzhund organization way before WDA: UNITED SCHUTZHUND CLUBS OF AMERICA.
It's my understanding WDA was created in the 80s when a group who were more interested in SV style showing including Landau and Battaglia became disgruntled with USA. To many of those involved, schutzhund was seen as just something needed in order to show in the working class. At the same time, GSDCA was under pressure from WUSV because of the lack of participation by GSDCA in schutzhund as well as the fact that the AKC GSDCA breed standard deviates from the world standard. So this was a match made in heaven. Landau could continue with the SV style shows and GSDCA could basically pay lip service regarding schutzhund, and the world standard of the GSD.
To this day WDA is much more heavily invested in SV shows while USA remains the primary schutzhund organization for this country.
By the way, the American Show Shepherd most certainly is NOT a German Shepherd, not by any stretch of the imagination. The German Shepherd Dog is FIRST and FOREMOST a working dog, something Am Line breeders have no concept of. They have reduced this breed to something good only for running around a ring in one direction and a pretty lawn ornament.
I am very interested in the part of Danny Spreitler's letter that addresses discrepancies in the number of GSDCA members as reported to WUSV.

The AKC does not allow ANYTHING IN REGARDS TO SCHUTZHUND! What sanctioned events in SCH are there w/AKC? So.... GSDCA is CERTAINLY NOT needed in this regard. There ARE 2 DIFFERENT Shepherds one is The AMERICAN Shepherd and one is EUROPEAN (The true German Shepherd). One works, one does not. 2 different dogs! The only time an American Breeder needs the German dog is to fix a problem that they created. What German dogs are in the AMERICAN SHOW RING? Are they big winners? NOT! Hidden away!
The only DESTRUCTIVE ORGANIZATION... is The GSDCA! Stop the lies. WDA should be dismantled, and start anew away from the AMERICAN Shepherd Dog Organization. (DESTRUCTIVE they are, NOT CONSTRUCTIVE to the GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG!!)
