molly a dog shouldent be kept in a kennel 24/7 ..so it doesent matter if you have 3 sides that they cant see out of. its ok because they will not be in there long enough for that to matter  steve i really like the look of your kennel ..it looks very big and well build.

L DogHandler
What do you mean dogs should not stay out doors in Kennels 24/7, Mine do and they are healthy, Happy never a health problen the Coats are brilliant
I could say that about Dogs living in a house where is the difference except you have the central heating on in the Winter No good for Dogs more so with a double coated dog, and most sleep or stay in a cage if the owner is at work But so long as they are kept well who can say otherwise some do not have gardens
Plus mine get two walks a day and are SChH trained at clubs 3 or 4 times a week they have a good life and they look the part as well
Does this young Dog looked as if it has been done wrongly

Underneath the deck is a thick layer of gravel for drainage. Cleanup was never a problem, you scoop the poop just like any other kennel and you use bleach about twice a week for disinfectant. The bottom is open for circulation. If there are a lot of dogs then you need to put in a mini septic which is incredibly easy to do. For the septic you can use a plastic garbage can. There are plans on the internet to make one. You would need to buy the enzyme stuff for that.

These are septic systems I've used for 10 yrs. Enzymes come with them! I like the raised kennels...easy to teach the dogs to deficate outside the kennel...My dogs rarely go in the kennel!

That is why I said they are not finished.  There will be a thick layer of gravel.  There will also be a run attached in the front.  This was the first one we have just finished last week and we have put a Kuranda bed in it.  My dogs get out 3 times per day and do their business outside.  If they have an accident (rare) it is no problem cleaning it.  These are set up in shade.  It gets hotter in an open 10X10.  We are building #2 at this time.  This one will be bigger but have 2 runs in it.  It will also have a run attached.  When t gets nasty out I can close the door and keep them in.  I noticed my female that was constanly pacing in an open kennel is now calm laying on her bed.  Cost- this one with all materials including gate about $1,000.  Of course that does not include the run that will be attached.  I will post pictures as soon as they are up.  Very easy to build.  These kennels are similar to the kennels my father had in Germany and I love German kennels.  You can also ad a wall and a walk thru door in the back.  So many option so little money, LOL.  My dogs deserve it and it does keep the calmer.

Would any dedicated dog owner not exercise there Dog whether it lives in the House or an out door Kennel that i would think is taken for granted that it is exercised, Yes and i think they are all the better for living outdoors,

Does anyone use Gravel to floor the kennel area?  Why or Why not?

by olskoolgsds on 22 May 2010 - 04:05

Barb,
I am finishing up on my kennel as we speak.  It is similar to Bhall's somewhat but is 24' long and 15' deep total.  It is on a concrete slab that covers the entire indoor/outdoor part out to the front.  If you think of Bhall's kennel, just put it on concrete, lengthen it, than have a chain link area in the front for the dogs to come out to.The actual building is 10' deep with 5' out side.

What it amounts to is that they have an indoor/outdoor kennel they can access.  The indoor can be shut so as to keep them in and quiet at night.  It has sound board as part of the walls and ceiling to cut barking noise down.  It has 5 nice vynol windows that can run fresh air through the entire building and also provide good light and vision for them. ( I have never liked the idea of having my dogs kept in areas of limited visability, I think this decreases attention and potentially drive). They will also have a doggy door on the side to let them out to an enclosed area 7'x 10' adjacent the kennel for true out door use for a potty area as well.  I have never been keen on the idea of dogs using concrete to potty on either. I have a 10' tree that will be placed in a large cedar box for my male to use.

The concrete slab was poured at a slope of about 2" from back to front and 3" from one side to the other.  This gives excellent run off for washing down.  I use horse matts on top of the concrete in the enclosed area.  I also built it with the bottom plate off of the slab by 3/4" so I can wash it down from the outside as well as the inside.  I just put spacers under the bottom plate where I anchored the plate to the concrete.  In the end it will be easy to clean, good ventilation, running water, sound resistant, warm in winter, cool in summer, and attractive for my neighbors.  I used a lot of cedar as well for smell and insect deterent.

My neighbors ask me if I am going to live back there.  I want to have something that looked good as well as practical.  If I ever get a little better with a computer I will post some pictures.

Take your time Barb, I have thought about this for several years and wanted it done the best it could be.  You can't undo it once your done.  Good luck
