Jim,
I have not tried the two methods you mentioned. I have taken a couple of steps back in training so I have been working the bark and hold on a tie out. I also vary the rewards 2 barks, 20 barks, 10 barks, etc..Your methods sound logical and I will try next time I train. I appreciate your input. Thanks.

ziegenfarm you state that...."if the dog quits barking, but never takes his eyes off the helper, he will lose no points."  Yes they will lose points in the B&H exercise but not after the "out" from the bite.

The B&H is guarding exercise and therefore the intensity of the guarding is where it is scored highly.  If your dog is rewarded with the sleeve in the B&H routinely whether after 5 barks or 20 barks in prey mode, maybe that's why he quits.  You must add some element of pressure to stimulate the dog into defense in the H&B.

I like this video of Escha van Tiekerhook for the exercise in the B&H but I do not know how to embed it.

does the rulebook say how many times the dog is required to bark?  i have not seen it.  you may be right, poseidon, but it appears to be discretionary.  i've seen lots of dogs quit barking, yet continue to guard and still receive high points.

Refering to the schutzhund rules (2005), the duration for the B&H is 20 seconds long.  So if the dog has stopped barking after 20 secs before his handler collects him from the blind, there may not be any points deduction provided the B&H is also strong.  Anything less than 20 secs is penalised.

Perhaps someone can chip in here if my account is incorrect.

The dog must bark for approx 20 sec, THEN the judge motions for the handler, to approach, THEN the handler must wait for the judges next signal to call out the dog (here/fuss).  BUT the dog must remain intensly guarding/barking  until the handler calls out the dog.   In fact this part, from the time the handler approaches until the judge signals the call out, it is very important that the dog remain actively guarding.   Handlers practice walking up and past the dog, up and back, walking around  while the dog is actively guarding in the  H&B, so that the dog learns never to become distracted by his handler approaching.  The hold and bark must be an active guard, no silent guard here.

Thanks sueincc.  Your description of the scenerio is what I often see as well.  I seldom witness a passive guard where the dog stops barking in a B&H exercise.

Will there be point deduction if after 20 sec of barking the dog just guards passively before the call out?

It's faulty if the dog stops barking continuously at any point during this exercize, until commanded by the handler to return to heel, and so points are taken accordingly.

wormser says it takes his dog 20-25 sec.  to bark 30 times.  seems to me he is doing what is required so long as he continues to guard.

try what jim says, that usually gets positive results from a dog but it takes some reps. Sometimes it can make your dog get a little dirty or your outs might suffer, its a give and take thing. Good luck keep us posted.
