Our 9 mo. old female is very affectionate and has lots of drive and energy, but I'm concerned about a habit of her mouthing me upon greetings. She'll submissively pee also, but then she bites, lightly, but it's still annoying. My last two shepherds didn't do this. I'm not quite sure how to reprimand her, if I should spray her with water if she does this, or if I should just let it go as puppy behavior and hope she outgrows it. Any suggestions?

Teach her what to bite, i.e. a ball or tug toy or stuffed toy. At first when greeting her, take the toy with you and offer it to her instead of your hands, then after about a week, tell her to get her toy herself.

Also, if anyone is "playing rough" with the pup with their hands, cut it out. This encourages the pup to bite human flesh and clothes and they will usually offer the behavior at other times.

If you spray her with water or reprimand her, you risk making the submissive peeing worse.

I agree with Changer. You have to teach her what she is allowed to bite and what not to bite. You must keep your hands away from her when you come home,no petting right away, be calm. Absolutely stop anyone from "playing rough" with her with their hands if they are doing that . Let her out to pee before you greet her. Ignore her when at first you come home, this way she will hopefully calm down after a while and not pee with excitement. Is it truely submissive peeing or maybe excited?Good luck

Changer is right on.  We keep real chew toys handy all over when we have puppies.  Substitute an allowed toy for hand, arm, foot, whatever you don't want chewed.

The submissive peeing is definitely excited behavior, but seems typical to a lot of puppies. I'll try ignoring her when I come home more than I have been. I'm glad you mentioned the toy as substitute for the hand biting.  She is understanding she is not supposed to jump up, but can't help but signal me this way. I think I've seen pups do this with their mothers so it's some sort of dog code, but I'm not too crazy about the behavior.  I'll try these ideas. She's definitely regarding me as alpha, but I think this is her way of dominating as much as she can get away with doing.

abby.. exactly right on her trying to dominate. i stop this type of behavior early on.  they know they get to bite alot of things but my hand is not one of them..
