Hello everyone.

I've been watching my 4 month old female puppies coat develop lately and have noticed her back has wavy hair from about the shoulders down her tail.  At 6wks, she had the normal looking short, straight coat and it has slowly progressed into this wavy look that now covers her entire back.  It's not necessarily longer than the other hair and she "does" have an undercoat.  She does NOT have  fringe or longer hairs around her feet, legs, trousers or ears.  My breeder said that her male she kept back from this litter also has some of the waviness to him.  Would this be any indication at all of plush or long coat recessive genes?  She does have a bit of a "soft" or silkier feel to her coat than my 9 month old female of standard stock coat.  As far as I know, there are no long or plush coats in her immediate lines.  Her pedigree is under Savage vom Haus Willow.

Thank you in advance as always.

Long stock (plush) coats and longcoats are usually apparent at just a few weeks of age. Your puppy may mature to have a very normal coat, and time will tell. It sounds as if you definitely do not have a longcoat.

The "softness" of the coat is of interest, as I have seen dogs with stock coats who felt "softer" than their littermates. I have seen the wave infrequently in puppies who matured to have very normal coats. At this end I would not be concerned, as the coat can change a lot until the puppy is a year old or so, and it can still change a bit more.

Thank you Bob-O.

I looked at her grand dam a bit more and it seems as though she (Sela Vom Danischen Hof) may also have had a bit of this look on her back.

Was just curious and wondered where it came from.  It's unique looking.

Thank you for your reply.  She is a beautiful puppy.

Nearly all GSD pups have wavy hair on their backs at 4 months. Its the area where they first grow guard hair. Don't worry about it.

I too had a female that has now passed that had a slight wave over her croup. Also a friend of mine has a year old female that at about 4-5 months of age she described her back as so wavy the hair was starting to point back to the neck. My friend was pretty upset for awhile but Jenna grew out of it, I saw her a few weeks ago and she has a beautiful coat.

I also had a male who was like this as a pup, very wavy, we had to do serious brushing before a show, but by a year old his coat was perfectly normal. I also have a female who suddenly developed a wavy coat along her back about 3 weeks into her first pregnancy, and it lasted throughout the pregnancy then went back to normal.  I thought this may be a sign of pregnancy in her especially as the next time she was bred her coat did not go wavy and she was not pregnant.  However, the third time she was bred she was pregnant and her coat did not grow wavy, so so much for that theory!   Anyway I say nothing to wory about and as Shelley Strohl mentions, when they first grow the line of new hair along their backs, usually around 4 months, it is very often wavy at first.

I'm with Shelly on this one,  Most of our pups have that wave thing going at this age...  But some turn out very short coated,  others turn out plush.  I don't think the 4 month mark is a good age for indication of coat type,  too many changes will occur still.  I bought 2 pups just over a year ago,  one I thought was going to be a plush,  NOPE they are both stock as stock can get.  I would not worry.
