Hi All,

I am new to this board and also GSD's. I recently purchased a beautiful male pup from a reputable breeder over here in the U.K, he is now 14wks old. When he was approx 10wks old his right ear became erect with his left one following suite about a week later. I arrived home yesterday to find that his right ear is now floppy whilst his left is still erect. Is this normal or is it a problem ?

Also, what do you think of my dog's sire ?. I am by no means an expert so would appreciate some feedback from some experienced GSD fans.

It is not a problem. Pups ears can go up and down when they start to teethe. I've known of dogs taking up to a year old to get their ears erect. Enjoy your beautiful pup and don't look for problems. You should have talked to the Breeder about this and he/she would give you the reassurance you need.

Marley,

If the dog is teething the ears can drop.  Don't get too agitated until he's got his big boy teeth in.  However, if they don't stand back up after he's done, you may have to tape the ears.  Contact your breeder and he/she should be able to give you some input.

Marley,

He is to young to be worried about his ears, like everyone else said. I am more of working lines but I do have to say I like the looks of his dad!! Just have fun with him right now. My females ears didn't come up until she was 8 months old. If their not up at that time then I would worry.

Your pups sire is very nice. I like all the 1a hips also.

Thanks for the replies and comments. I would normally have asked the breeder about his ears, only they are holiday for a fortnight !!!.

Like the others said, it is probably due to teething -  the teething process leeches calcium from the system.  If it makes you feel better, you can supplement him with something like goat's milk or Citracal (calcium and vitamin C) .  I use low doses of this for all my bred females throughout the heat, whelping and lactation, and put my puppies on it through the teething process.

Good advice, everyone. I would not brace the ears unless they do not stand firm by five (5) or six (6) months.
