I am interested in reading more about genetics in dogs and which features come from the dog or the bitch. For example if you have a not so good coloured bitch, does a strong pigmented dog override the bitch, same with ears if a dog is soft eared would a strong eared bitch put the problem right. My question is, which has the  dominant genes, dog or bitch and in what areas.

So can anyone recommend a good book to get me started or lead me to internet resources.

Thanks in advance

Look at the classic by Malcom Willis, Ph.D. (I don't remember the title, do a web search, check amazon.com).  Look for Wynthea Strickland's classic on the GSD.  It is one of the very best even though an older book like the Dr. Willis book.

Both of  Malcolm Willis' books:  "Genetics of the Dog," and "The German Shepherd Dog: a Genetic History."   Both, I believe are out of print, but you may be able to find a used copy.  Used copies can be rather pricey.  I would highly recommend both.

A good basic book on genetics is Paticia J. Wilkie's: "Future Dog: Breeding for Genetic Soundness."   It is clearly written and is in laymans terms.  However, color is only discussed briefly.

I am not sure where you are located, but in the United States, a letter with genetics questions sent to the veterinary schools at either the University of California at Davis, to Tufts University or to Cornell University, or the University of Minnesota may also yield some answers as well as some good resources for further research.  I have had good results from Tufts and U of C Davis.

Cheers,

CM

A good book is "The Genetics of the Dog" edited by A. Ruvinski and J. Sampson

And anything out of the "Journal of Heredity"...Alot of the major land-grant universities with Animal Science programs will have this journal (also found in big Science schools).  You can also purchase an online subscription...but its easier and much cheaper to get it through a university library.  I get most of my subscriptions through Virginia Tech...alot of Universities will do that for their students and alumni.

I have the book "The German Shepherd Dog: A Genetic history" and it is really a good book.  The only think that I was disappointed in was that they mostly focus on the showlines and not so much on working lines....if I remember correctly.

"The Dog and its Genome" is from recent print.  It's terribly expensive though ($135), but you might find it at the library or an inter-library loan, then decide if it's worth having in your personal library.
