Don DeLeon

by Don DeLeon on 14 May 2007 - 05:05

This problem must be catching.  We went to a camp-out at a camp ground near Lake Henshaw in San Diego County,CA and it was the same thing.  We had my friends GSD and while we were trying to register at the office you could see loose dogs roaming the camp ground.  And in the pack, was what I know to be a Rott and two bull terrier type(won't say the "P" word) looking dogs along with one other large dog.  I pointed this out and the person at the desk ignored me and repeated that my friends dog could not come in.  Then he said he has never seen a GSD of that color (sable&dingy mixed colors).  Not wanting to cause a stink we left and did not come back.  Our group that organized the event was in kahoots with the management and also told us later upon inquiry into this problem that they were against having GSDs because they bite without provocation.  These "friends" in the organization I belong to even have given me the nickname Three Dog Don and know that about my trained dogs when I had them.  My friends dog is SchH3 and a therapy dog with a solid temperment...it doesn't matter.  I've gotten a thicker skin due to this occurence.

I'm afraid it's going to get worse before it gets better.

Regardless of the SchH3, is the dog is a registered Therapy Dog, they, by law, can not refuse you entry!!!!  I had this problem a few years back with my daughters SD, I now have little cards that I carry with me AT ALL TIMES, in my purse, car, dog bag..doesn't matter.  When I'm asked WHY I have a SD, I simply tell them that, by law, THEY are NOT allowed to ask what the disability is, only the tasks the dog preforms!!!!  I have the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) on speed dial.  Attitudes quickly change!  I know and understand that not ALL of my dogs  are allowed access anywhere, and I simply tell people, to their face, that I'm sorry for THEIR ignorance of my breed, and that perhaps they will someday take the time to educated themselves!

Unfortunately, it is going to get worse before it gets better, and there isn't much we can do about it! :-(

The thing that angers me the most about all of this dog BS is that if they would enforced their damned rules and sanction the dog owners who break those rules, one could take a lion into a campground and not have any problems. The animal would be kept on it's own site, picked up after, not left to roam around and no harm could be done. It's like all the BSL, enforce the existing regulations and stop generating new ones to cover your own faillure to enforce what it already in place.

Dog breeders in the US are in for a very big fight to keep their civil rights. We need to be extremely vigilant when we choose who we vote for.

Blitz is not a registered therapy dog.

Then Register him as one! :-)  That will teach them....then go back, with the dog, and let them refuse you then.  If you wish, I can send you a copy via personal email of the cards that I keep with me.  They work wonders when you tell them if they continue to refuse a SD, you will not only have their job, but own their business in the end! LOL

Check out this site...they are wonderful.

I would do that in a heartbeat, but I don't want to support any campground that has breed specific bans.
