melba

i have recently found myself living alone with my two little boys out in the middle of nowhere. i am looking to buy a dog to train as a personal protection dog and am wondering which lines do the best work. i am not looking for a sport dog, but a dog to live inside. the dog will never be titled. it must bite for real and not be fased by anything. any suggestions on where i should start my search?? i do not believe that i should own a gun for a couple reasons. a gun can be used against me, i have two little BOYS, and id probably shoot myself in the foot. thank you for any input.

You are more than likely opening that old can of worms....'working lines vs show lines'!

Either of these lines would suit your purpose.  I would suggest getting a young adult with basic obedience already done for you and then hiring a GREAT trainer to work with you for the protection aspect.

Even tho a dog isn't a gun...they CAN be dangerous to guests if not trained properly!!!

You will also want to make sure it has been raised around kids.

Just my opinions.  Good luck.

well soothers is right. but you said that you'd like to train. i don't have the knowledge to train so i bought. if your interested in a trained dog i would tell you to look at www.texomak-9.com . bill and evan are very honest. i bought 2 dogs from them. a protection dog and a showline female for my wife. ernst is everything they said he'd be! was extremely well priced compared to what i'd been looking at. was an import with all the paperwork and x-rays. they have a great guaruntee. and he will bite for real! he's definately no sleeve dog. they also give a handlers course with purchase. so instead of a piece of paper with some commands and a video you will get hands on experience with your new dog.

 just another .02

by lines, i meant specific names. i will never own a bannana back. JMO. i prefer DDR and Czech. i know that certain lines excel as sport dogs. i have a Lord grandaughter, and she is a sleeve dog. she would bite for real once, and if someone hurt her, she would never bite again.

i do have a good trainer already, i currently work with him. i dont know much about the protection stuff, just the schutzhund stuff. i know that they are different. he knows much more then i do, and has been doing it a lot longer.

i do not have guests, so that is not a problem. my dog can not be used against me like a gun can. i weigh 125lbs., not that hard to put me in an uncompromising position. dogs i can handle.

I always say... Do YOUR Homework !!   Meaning visit many kennels try to buy locally so the support base is there when you need it,  Find a breeder who is willing and wanting to help you make this work.  Fine someone who has the time to spend with you when things come up.  Find someone who will answer all of your questions twice if you wish to ask twice.

This dog is important to you that is quite obvious.   Find a breeder who will understand the importance of YOU getting the RIGHT dog for YOUR specific Needs, Wants, Desires.

Best of Luck and would be happy to help if I can in any way.

What does your trainer suggest? My thinking is that the trainer, knowing you and your style of handling, could be a really good resource for lines and then people here could point you in the direction of good producing kennels for those lines.

Good luck with it,

Dawg

he has suggested a few kennels. vom ramhausen is no longer breeding. they had a litter by ado top-pas that the one female would have been perfect. too bad. i am also looking at an ellute daughter, but im not sure yet if she has the civil drives im looking for. i am also looking at a norbo ben-ju x denny male, BUT i dont like denny. most of the puppies iv seen out of her are skitzy and shy. one that im working with, for example. dog looks intimidating, but push comes to shove and he trys to run away.

oh, and the kennel where i got my dog, they only breed west german show lines. my dog was a throw away because she didnt have what they were looking for. she may not be a top competitor, but her obedience is impeccible. they deffinately do not have what im looking for. SO, any suggestions on where i should start??

I suggest anyone who wants to respond to "Melba" go back and read her series of posts around Feb 16th 2007. Some things just don't add up IMO. For instance she just stated that the kennel she got her dog from only breeds West German Show Lines. Read the post below where she says they also breed DDR.

The following is one of her posts from around Feb 16th.

i stand corrected. she was nine months old when she got pregnant. she was 11 months old when she had the puppies.still not right by me though. here is the whole story. said "breeder" "rescued" sydney and her sister quincy from a home where they lived under someone's house. she had the intention of breeding these dogs anywhay. brought them to her kennel. sydney got knocked up by her stud dog. sydney had puppies. "breeder" sold all but two. i've been wanting a gsd for a long time. my hubby wanted a male. both puppies had weak ears and one only had one testicle decended(stud dogs great grandfather). wanted 500 for the puppy with one testicle. wanted 300 for sid. said she was not what she was looking to breed.(she breeds west german high lines, although now she states that she breeds ddr lines as well)she was a throw a way because she didnt think she would bite (we proved her wrong!!:) she says she trains schutzhund dogs but has been asking me to handle a dog for her for some seminars, which i have no problem doing because it affords me the oppritunity to work with more dogs learning about schutzhund. i work one other dog but will not mention her name due to the negative attatchment this post might create. she has no affiliation with this "breeder" in question. because this woman aquired sydney and had no hand in the breeding of sids. parents, i would say the pedigree's accurate. her father has had his hips done, and if i remember correctly, they were normal. 2 other littermates from the fathers litter were also ofa'd. one being fair, the other excellent(i looked up numbers on the ofa website). i have no info on the mother other than her akc #.i would like to know a lot more, but my research has turned up nothing, other than there is a kennel in the us by the name of von firehaus. so that is where i stand, what i believe, etc.....
