What is a "hook tail"?

by chinito on 12 May 2007 - 11:05

A tail that forms a hook like and sometimes when the dog is on alert, the tail rises high over the top line. Like the tail of a Siberian Husky. But. of course, not exactly like that just semi Husky tail. I don't know if it's called crooked tail.

techically caused by the length and angle of the vertebrae within and throughout the spine and tail.  Shorter vertebral discs cause more "curl"  This vertebral length is also what is responsible for tail set, if the tail is set too high.

If its just the very end of the tail curling, try clipping the hair on the very end so it doesnt touch the ground.

I have a dog whose tail does a U turn about 3'' from the end. These vertebrae seem to be wider at the bottom side of the tail than at the top. I am considering surgery to correct this if it is possible.

This can be genetic or can happen at birth. I have had this problem in the past and had it explained to me at the University vet school. Some get this flaw corrected by chiropractic or the unethical show person can have a simple surgical procedure done that will corrrect the flaw. It is really no big deal. Its a lot more common in am/lines but not uncommon in working or show lines. Love your dog, dont worry about his tail. Some would suggest he or she not be bred. If that is you goal then consult with some of the genetic experts or your vet to determine if this happened in the birth canal or is indeed a vertibae or recessive gene problem.

O.K. and  how is the hook tail related to SHORT CROUP...???

I understand the SHORT VERTEBRAL DISKS causing hook in the end of the tail...Can it be  the cause also of BANANA backs (roaches)...???

For curly tails the top of the tail (disks inbetween the vertebra) are the ones shorter or thinner...for roaches, the ones below (Disks inbetween the backbone) are shorter than the top or back line...

Can Glucosamine and Chondroiting help...

Needs advice on this... any scientific support... REMEDY.???

By the way roaches do sometimes subside for a young puppy and may indicate a firm back (as what Germans say..)

But thats a different topic... I miss the BANANA back saga...  LOL ...Marci
