I was told that you could get rid of ticks and flees by feeding dogs garlic with their meals. Is this true?

Also, what other natural ways to deal with these pests?

I have an Aunt who has had GSD's since forever and she swears by brewer's yeast. She puts it in their food and says she has never had a problem with fleas. I have heard about the garlic also but third hand and never had anyone say how well it works. Another thing I've heard is white vinegar but good luck getting a dog to take it!! I don't think they'd eat anything with vinegar but just a guess. With all of the natural and chemical remedies out there I still think good grooming and checking your dog's coat regularly is the best way to be sure they are free of any parasites.

PS, I don't think any natural remedy will "get rid of" fleas or ticks, if anything it would be a preventative measure.

diatomaceous earth. you can get it in hardware stores. do not buy pool grade. buy garden or food grade. it is useful on any pest with an exoskeleton---fleas, roaches, ants, etc... how it works--- the particles are so small that they get in the cracks in the exoskeleton and dry the little buggers up from the inside out. it will keep working as long as it stays dry. DO NOT PUT IT DIRECTLY ON THE ANIMALS!!! it is not harmful to humans or animals, but if you put it on them, it will dry out their skin. i sprinkle it on my carpets and sweep it in, then lightly vacuum the excess off the top. you can also use it outside. to sprinkel, i use a metal sifter, like for powdered sugar. this stuff really works. completely natural, no chemicals whatsoever. same ingredient they put in powdered spices to keep them from clumping. also used in fish tanks to clarify the water. good luck fighting the war against pests!!!

I also use DE and have excellent results.  I DO put it directly on the dogs.  It is a dry powder but I have not found it to dry the skin out really.  After a few hours you do not even see/notice the powder.  Works very well for us.  You want to try to avoid yourself or the dogs breathing in the powder.

DE can also be used as a natural wormer for pups/dogs.

i noticed that when i use in in my carpets that it really dries my skin out, i figured it would do the same for the pets.
