Starting from the day when they are separated from the mother I feed my pups 4 times a day until they are 4 months old, 3 times a day until 6 moths and after that 2 times a day. There is daily quantity of food each pup should get so divide it by 4,3 or 2 meals. Once a day, larger quantity is hard on digestive system. So, smaller quantities several times a day.

Young puppies need to be fed numerous times a day because they can only eat so much and their bodies burn it off quickly.. the can become hypoglycemic and become ill if they are not fed multiple times..
I have always fed my litters 3 times a day and 3 times a day up until about 12 - 14 weeks, then we go to 2x a day for the rest of their lives.....

Pups 3X per day until 5 or 6 months, then free-fed (I feed kibble, so no concerns about leaving it in their bowls).
The dogs generally eat a light amount in the morning, a light lunch in the early afternoon, a moderate supper around 6:00 pm, and then a light amount before bedtime. They handle free-feeding well and maintain appropriate weights and energy levels on their own. I just keep their bowls full, and it seems that knowing that food is always available keeps them from gorging themselves. Not something you could do with a Lab or other heavy eater, though - you'd wind up with a 200 lb. dog!

Being scared of bloat, I feed my 6 month old pup 4 times a day. In the past though, I've fed only 2-3 times a day for same age pups and never had a problem. Just feel better to be safe than sorry.
My pup is a gobbler though. His food dish is empty within seconds and I believe this is one of the things that is worrisome in respect to bloat. Any comment on that theory?
