"A tendancy toward torsion with a bitch with no prior probs would strem from Natz  most likely. "

Taken from the crossing sables issue...

I'm kindda curious if its the TORSION health issue , or is it about movement??? Because sidegaiting and coming and going was also discussed... Please help... need more info

IMO from reading that, it sound like the health issue. I dident read the other part about the gaiting, so I couldent really compare the two.

The most common use for "Torsion" in dogs is another word for Bloat. It is a health issue, in that the stomach or intestine twists and cuts off both ends. The natural digestive gases build up as they have no way out, and expand the abdomine of the dog. Causing a "bloated" look. It happens very quickly and they usually die. Surgery can be successful in saving the dog's life if it is caught early enough, but the chances of it happening again are very high. Some believe that predisposion to "Torsion" can be genetic. That is probably why the comment was made.

Natz was known to produce deep chested progeny, some were wide coming at you.  It was alleged that his progeny had higher rates of torsion than average and/or carried the genes for torsion in more than average frequency.  I know someone who bred his older bitch to a beautiful Natz sone who had one puppy in the litter die of torsion later on.  His bitch had produced several prior litters with no torsion. Apparentl deep chested GSDs with a large volume are also associated with a looser mesentary attachment of the intestines, thereby allowing the intestins to move around too much and break loose even more from the already weakened mesentary.  These dogs are alleged to also have an inability to belch after eating, thus keeping gasses from digested food in the intestines which cause them to rise like a balloon and twist in the process or at least disrup the vascular circulation, causing shock and death to the intestines so involved.

a big cause of torsion is having high drive and drinking/eating too much before working or playing.

i never work after eating and limit water while training. i use a sprayer while tracking to keep nose membranes  moist.
