I would leave him natural and just brush and bath him. He will be fine, they have their own cooling system and his is just right for him. The only trimming I have done is the bottom of the foot if the hair is sticking out of the pads, just so stickers or sticky cotton wood droppings dont get stuck there and cause a problem.
Would love to see a pic of him, I love longcoats!

triodegirl, I can tell you what I do here for all the long haried dogs at the shelter, I clip the insides of the back legs and thighs clip the entire underbelly, armpits, up between the front legs and higher portion of the inside of the front legs. I clip this as short as I can possibly clip it. This allows the dog to lye on the grass, dirt, concrete, whatever it may be and allows them to cool themselves much quicker than if they were not clipped. Also does not affect they're appearance or protection at all. Most dogs I clip in this way you can not even tell it has been done unless the dog lays down and rolls over. lol
Hope this helps you. :-)

As a retired groomer, nothing hurt me more than shaving a dog down.. and some dogs I refused to do it because it is not natural for them. what is important is that they are brushed regularly and dead hair is removed, that they have adequate water and shade. I have no problem with shaving pads or using the thinning shears on pants or featherings and of course, clipping areas that need to stay clean and free from bodily fluids. Drooling during bitework most often has very little to do with heat and way more to do with the dogs loving what they do.. My husbands GSD drools like a border collie while on the start line of an agility course.. raring to go, that's all!
