Ehrenwald

OK, a friend has a 5 month old pup that ate his wedding band that was on the coffee table when not looking. He waited 3 days and still no ring. The vet did the x-ray and it is in his stomach. They referred him to a specialist that wanted 1k to do an extraction and put him under to do so. No guarantee, and the next step was surgery. I told him I would seek other options before any of those. Any suggestions I can give him? The pup is doing fine, just holding his weight in gold!

A Poem For A New Puppy Owner

Don't smell crotches, don't eat plants.
Don't steal food or underpants.
Don't eat my socks, don't grab my hair.
Don't rip the stuffing from that chair!
Don't eat those peas! Don't touch that bush!
Don't chew my shoes. What IS that mush?
Eat your cookies. Drink your drink,
Outta the toilet! Outta the sink!
Away from the cat box, it's for the cat!
And MUST you kiss me after that?

Yes, raising a puppy, is not for the lazy!
Though puppies are funny, they're also quite crazy.
But don't despair, though its toil and strife.
After three years, you'll get back your life!
So, let's go for "walkies", you can "do your thing"
And perhaps I'll get back my good diamond ring!

Sorry...couldn't resist!  LOL!

That is hilarious! I am not sure if he will get the just of it, but, I am glad I am now not the only one having a good laugh!

Ok, now that I have wiped the tears from my eyes from laughing so hard. I heard peroxide may help. I have also heard feeding him bread and even cotton(not sure about that one). Or does he wait it out?

by Blitzen on 07 May 2007 - 22:05

Put a lot of metamucil in his food and he should pass it sooner or later. If he's eating, not vomiting or having diarrhea, frankly  I'd just wait it out. Something that size should easily pass through most any sized or aged dog.

Peroxide is used when the dog first eats something, it will make him vomit. Bread couldn't hurt, but if he were my dog I think I'd pass on the cotton.

I don't know about peroxide, that would probably make him vomit but not sure the ring would come up. I think I would wait before doing any of your vets suggestions. Your poor friend probably doesn't feel like poking thru crap every time the pup poops but I don't think the ring is hurting anything just sitting in the stomach. I am rally surprised it hasn't gone thru...

LOL at least you know where it is!It will come out sooner or later, just keep mashing the poop to see if it's passed. As long as puppy is not having problems....wait it out. Some high fiber food is a good idea. I guess, the bigger the weight of the ring, the longer to pass?maybe? Not peroxide for this one. H2O2 is great for other stuff but esp. if the ring is heavy. I can't recommend peroxide.  In theory,if it is still in the stomach, and is verified,it would work but with a wedding ring, no, I wouldn't. I doubt something that heavy would come back up. After a while longer, your friend may have to have it retrieved from the vet. Try the high fiber for some days first.

No peroxide, thats for when they just swallowed something and its in the esophagus and on the way to the stomach...like rat poison or a mouse or something that needs to come back......after it gets to stomach just feed extra fiber and it will pass....dont want to upset his whole digestion system over a little "pot of gold"......

I would HIGHLY suggest giving the pup some veggie oil and some butter. People may laugh, and others may say its a bad idea, but it has ALWAYS worked for me, no matter what has been in the stomach, it has ALWAYS worked! It makes the pup go, like fiber products, but also coats items, and makes them sort of slip out easier. Let us know if the suggestions work!

He could give the vege oil as recommeded above, and instead of digging in the poo, he could borrow a good metal detector!  Another thing that works too if 2oz of bacon grease.  Good Luck, surgery isn't needed unless he is having troubles.
