Comparing to other purebreed dogs, the GSD lacks uniformity both in the physical and non-physical aspects... Any ideas why other dog breeds uniform compared to ours???

Uniformity with Genetic diversity... A nice topic for dissertation... Regardless of the way it looks and the way it works... can we hope the next SV president AIM in this agenda...

We know that in GSD history, the club was found through PHYLAX society as the core group... Was forged to weltunion under one iron hand to mold the breed to what it is today...

Actually i would argue many other breeds are not uniform at all. many argue and breed varations just like the gsd breeders do.

We know for fact that the GSD, a Herding dog was manipulated to serve the purpose of Working people... The Phylax was probably just trying to breed dogs that look like Wolves and vicious as the feral ancestor, but Dog enough to serve as man's companion and worker... Hence a WORKING DOG...It fell out of its own momentum... Members trying only to breed for the wolf-look and other members for sport...Until the time Max was task to manage the club, there were members with different aims and visions and Max for the love of our breed gave it a job...He knew the grazing lands were getting smaller, so he gave it work and made it suitable for work... The SV president has control on how the GSD will look and how it will work for man's purpose... I remember hearing why bring the GSD to its original form??? It looks far better than it used to be... I say, lets just aim for UNIFORMITY with GENETIC diversity.

I agree with Desert Rangers, there is a big variation in all breeds thus a number of different "types" and "styles" in most all breeds.

Not all is as it appears. To the uninitiated all GSD's are deeply angulated long bodied black and tan with overlong collie heads, etc... There is however an element of truth as the GSD is relatively young as a breed, and in its short lifetime has had a number of different purposes and influences. Most of us here are immersed in the bree, and make it our mission to compare and analyze each dog we see. To many who only see a GSD once in a while, and are not given to analysis it is just another dog. I suspect that it is comparable in other breeds. Best Wishes, Jonah

Guys.. you may be right... probably were comparing too many GSD's  thats why we're criticizing the difference within our breed... Why not focus on the overall similarity and standard than going into details???

For someone with an uninitiated eye...IT will look the same ...WOLFLIKE dogs with brains of a G.I.Joe...

I hope the mistake done in history will not happen again (getting into extremes like the PHYLAX society)... hope we get a Rittmeister Max like- SV president... They seem to die out during their terms of office without giving the next one chores to follow through... Who knows??? Another show-type for selling may appear... The CARTELs probably just aiming for GSDs that have degrees and ratings to be sold world-wide

One thing I noticed... lately, TOP dogs are not sold outside the fatherland, until they have shown off their progeny and have left outstanding specimens behind ... They then get into the hands of the wealthy small-eyed people who then like factories mass produce the damn good dog.  So now, money is not only being made in Germany but outside of Germany... My hope is the ones being sold should have at least the character that is expected of our breed.

This is where the Martins' statement apply..."For every good dog there is a good trainer..., Dogs pass, trainers pass, but good genes you could keep, they can be passed on..." (I adlib a little bit...) We breed only for the improvement of our stock both in quality and temperament...NOT in QUANTITY...
