Hi, if you have one pup from a litter who seems to sit back and watch things, what do you think of that? He does all the normal puppy stuff also but just seems set apart this way and be particular in what he engages in. How do you read this? To me he seems to be thinking. Thanks in advance.

Yep, that's your future troublemaker!

by marci on 05 May 2007 - 23:05

Either shy ,timid or unsecure...

LOL, troublemaker in a good way or a bad way? Seriously, what do you think of this pup? he might be my pick male. How do you see his future? needs a job? something else? I have had several "troublemakers" who are my "stars" now.

Hmm, that is hard to say without a complete temperament test, and of course those are never 100% correct. Marci, I agree that shyness and timidness come to mind, but I have seen this before and the puppy developed normally. I vote that he is very independent, and may be difficult to train. But, unless you know the results of a good test (perhaps repeated in two weeks), it's a guess at this point. Bob-O

Yes, I agree Bob-O, difficult to train as I have encountered also... some will only obey out of sheer avoidance of conflicts... But some of these types of pups can be very good companions... just looking for the correct owner... as sort of person-type pup... may have conflicts when getting along with other animals.

gsdlver2, How long has this pup demostrated this behavior, and how old is he? I had one behave like that in a previous litter. At four-five weeks, he seemed standoffish, not as interested in interacting with me and his littermates until he'd observed us playing for five minutes or so. I was very disapointed, as the litter breeding was fantastic. I had him slated, in my mind, as a give-away to a pet home...but then a week later, the behavior disapeared and he was just as bold as everyone else, and suddenly one of the most affectionate. He ended up being one of the best in the litter. He appears to think through things. His entire attention, in training, is always on his owner. He never seems to notice other dogs, even when there are a couple others training in the same training room. He has always been more people-oriented (since his turnaround) than littermate oriented. I don't know if these characteristics contributed to the behavior when it happened. I was VERY surprised at the turn around, I might add.

Person-type ,sensitive, more time to spend training ,but is a THINKER. A bit of indipendence, may be later verry PROTECTIVE.OBEDIANCE may be slow,PROTECTION faster.Just my thought.I would like to see a photo of the face,if so please Do NOT use the flash not good for the eyes.

Hey Robert, what you said kind of concurred with what I had to say about the puppy I had! Veronica
