Questions on GSD names - Page 1

I'm sure someone can clear this up for me... What is the difference between Von and Vom, or is there one? And should that word be capitalized in a dog's name? I see it done both ways.

Also, I've noticed that GSD names, specifically kennel names, often come from the dam's side. For example, Bosse vom Hühnegrab, mother's name is Irina vom Huhnegrab, sire's name is not used. I just looked at several that follow this pattern. Is this protocol?

One more question...is there an easy way to contact the owner of a dog posted on PDB? I see some listing that I would appreciate being able to get a hold of, to inquire about puppies, breeding, or just general questions. Many are not affiliated with an established kennel so I can't Google the kennel to find a contact number.

Von means "from" in German, Vom is a contraction of "von dem" which means "of the" in German. Some people just have a preference for which one they use, some just switch it up on a whim. Capitalization, really isn't that big of a deal. I probably would not though.

Usually the kennel name you see, in your example "Hühnegrab", follows the mother because the mother gives birth at the kennel and the puppies are born and raised by that kennel. Since the stud's kennel has little to do with the raising more often than not, they do not get credit for the pup's name usually. For example, if the mother is owned by Hühnegrab, and Hühnegrab kennel whelped and raised them, the sire's kennel (whatever it may be) generally won't have their kennel listed in the dog's name. But if the stud's kennel bought or leased the female and whelped and raised the pup's themselves, then the stud's kennel would probably be the one to have their kennel name on the pup's.
 

Euro dogs use von or vom if it is a AKC registered dog they capitalize to be Von or Vom.. This is the reason you see both and there is a reason Admins change it to separate German bred dogs from AKC American bred dogs with name having Von and Vom.  Several members that buy dogs can assume when they see von or vom  they are German dogs.  If the dogs sire or dam are German bred there are breeders that use it so you do need to look at the Dogs Pedigree to know for sure.

I rather like the matriarchal naming of dogs, as explained in the first response. Makes good sense to me.

I'm submitting AKC registration paperwork on a young dog so glad I asked the question about Von or Vom first.

Any thoughts on how to contact owners on PDB?

Why doesn't the same thing happen with capitalization of z in Czech names as von/Von vom/Vom?

The Admins enter as AKC has the dog on their website unless it is a Czech, SV or another foreign registered dog.
