Hello Everyone,
I stay in India a hot and humid counntry. The atmosphere is conducive for the breeding of parasites like ticks and fleas. Right now there are few traetment avaliable aminly bath with Butox or similar medicines. Then Inj Ivermactin or oral ivermactin. Treatment with spot on kind of medicines where you put drops of the liquid on dogs spine. But all these tratments are sometimes useless when there is a burst of ticks and fleas population esepcially in summer. Then we have to physically remove the ticks and apply the medicine 3 to 4 times within 15 days and spray kennels with pesticides etc.
I would like to know if there are any new better medicines available for the treatment?
Is ivermectin safe to use? I heard it might affect productivity of the dog.
What are other means and measures we can follow to control the ticks and fleas?
Is this also a big problem in USA and Europe?
Thanks in advance

If you can get Frontline, I find this works much better than the sort you spot onto the skin, and it lasts much longer, in fact I found one treatment on all the dogs eliminates fleas and lasts for a long time, much longer than the 3 months it says on the bottle. Ticks are a ittle more diffcult but Frontline is quite effective for these too.

Sumo.
I use a product called Frontline Plus.It works incredible and must be applyed on the skin on their upper back.
Their is also a new one called "Revolution"I just started my dogs on that. This kills fleas ticks lice mange mites ear mites and is a once a month heartworn preventive, this cost almost the same as Front line,so it seems your getting a much better deal for your money with revolution.
And make sure you follow all directions on the application instructions, and always ask your vet befor trying a new product, espessily the Revolution!
GOOD LUCK!

There's also something called Advantix which is only for dogs that can sometimes works better than the Frontline or Revolution in a particular area. Revolution is not labeled for all ticks, but can help too. However, if you are in an area, that say, has a "tick nest" it's going to be impossible to totally prevent them. Advantix claims to help "repel" the fleas and ticks also. If you your home or kennel is getting infested with fleas, there's also a product called Program, which is a monthly pill which basically acts like flea birth control. It's not going to kill adult fleas, but will help with an infestation situation. There's also a product called Capstar, which is also an oral medication. That when given to an animal with fleas, the fleas drop off dead in an hour or so. Can be helpful if the Frontline or whatever else you are using is not cutting it totally. Also, if you are in a bad tick area, sometimes I've used both Frontline, Revolution, or Advantix in conjunction with a collar called Prevent Tick. The over the counter Flea and Tick Collars won't do a darn thing really, but this collar seems to work well.

A very important part of flea control is scrupulous cleanliness in the kennel, and any other areas the dogs frequent. Fleas breed in the bedding, or any areas where dog hair and flakes from the skin accumulate.
Wash or change your bedding frequently, vacuum and spray carpets, and other areas where the dogs lie, and you will be amazed to see the reduction in the number of fleas.
I can't advise you about ticks as they aren't a problem where I live.

I buy Frontline Plus over the internet ut I don't know about shipping to India. If you decide to go with Revolution, it is a goog product as it also protects against heartworm.. However ther are certain species of tick that it is not effective against

Wouldn't you have to have a prescription for the Revolution if it also works for heartworms?? I really like the Advantix as it does seem to repel ticks. I'm in NC and the ticks are everywhere. You can buy the Advantix from PetMeds and save a few bucks b/c it is a little more expensive.

I have also used revolution, but find frontline (the sort you spray and rub in all over) to be much more long lasting. I have not tried advantix so cannot comment on this one..
