Hi there folks! I have a few questions I was hoping you could answer as I am very new to all of this. My dog is a miniature daschund but on his paperwork it only says daschund. The person at the pet shop who sold him to me said, and I quote "They tried to tell us they were miniature daschund puppies but those aren't even a breed..." So now that I have my wee Simon, I would like to stud him out since he's been driving me nuts humping everything (He's almost 8 months old) and I am uncertain of getting him snipped. My question is really: 1. How can I charge a studding fee if my paperwork says one thing and he looks to be another....how much should I? I've never done this before. Does it matter what it says on the paperwork? 2. How often should I have him studded? Is he going to be humping everything in site a few weeks later? 3. How many times does it usually take for the female dog to become pregnant? Is this a daily thing for like a week or something and then we have a waiting period? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks all! Oh, and you can check out two small pics of him on my website: www.susanvoth.com/pictures.htm

THIS HAS TO BE A JOKE! 1. Besides this being a German Shepherd board (you should find a daschund board to answer your minature/not minature questions) It is obvious you need to spend a few years learning about your breed before you even consider breeding. 2. Who the hell still buys puppies from a PET STORE??? which takes me back to #1, learn more about your breed and you'd never consider buying from a pet store that purchases puppies from a PUPPY MILL. No respected breeder would EVER let a pet store sell their puppies! You know what? Just go here: http://www.dachsie.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=19998

First off, you shouldent breed him until her his MUCH older, he is still a puppy at 7 mons! Second, most small breed dogs do go through a "sexual stage" around that age, nothing to worry about. If you are not showing him, and from your own word "miniature daschund puppies aren't even a breed" then he should NOT be bred. Take him to the vet and get him "snipped". Take a trip to the local shelter and see how many unwanted dogs there are. Third, this is a site for people who show or work their German Shepherds, I dont see where Daschunds come into the picture. Im sorry if I come on to be rude, but I do hope you take my advise and neuter the dog. Just because he is purebred dosent mean he needs to make puppies. Anyhow, take him and enjoy him as a pet ;). Sue, I agree, you REALLY need to educate yourself about breeding. First off, all young males go through an adolescent phase when sex is the foremost thing on their minds. That does NOT mean you should stud the dog out. It will get better as he matures. Secondly, there are far to many unwanted pets in the world. Think very carefully before you go and make more puppies! Even purebred dogs wind up in the animal shelter, and thousands are euthanized every year. Thirdly, and most important, no one is going to want to breed to your dog unless he has proven himself in the show ring. You need to get him titled, or at least have a few wins in a confirmation class to prove to people that he DOES have superior traits that are worth passing on. Are his papers from a recognized kennel club, such as the AKC? (American Kennel Club.) I don't know about mini daschund vs. regular sized daschund, and don't have the time to google it, but I can answer a bit about the female's estrus (heat) Generally, it lasts about 21 days. The female is fertile only during the middle part of her cycle. Usually, the female will be sent to the vet for hormone tests and examination of the cells of the vagina to determine her fertile time, before being sent to the stud, or artificially inseminated. Generally, she is bred more than once, on at least two different days to make sure that the fertile period is caught. The owner will not know if the bitch is pregnant until at least part way through the pregnancy, which normally lasts about 63 days. At that time, an x-ray can be done to check for the presence of puppies. Prior to this, the bones are too cartilaginous to be visible on an x-ray.

Suvoth, By my rough assessment the international type GSD which is held to a strict standard only produces approximately 25% breedworthy females and probably less than 10% breedworthy males. Other less actively selected breeds are unlikely to produce half as many breeding prospects. Unless the breed is in danger of extinction or your dog truly has a real contribution to make, I suggest that you take your boy to a massage parlor, have a vet relieve his pressure for him, or wait it out and have him snipped after 24 months. A dog is not entitled to breed just because he wants to (any more than teenagers). Best Wishes, Jonah

First of all, Dachshunds were born to hump... They ALL do this - never seen a male that didn't. Also, according to AKC the Miniature Dachshund is a variety, not a BREED unto itself. So if I'm, not mistaken, all Dachshunds are regsitered as Dachshunds regardless of size (variety). But the pople who wrote before me are 100% correct - the dog should have something powerful to giuve back to the breed, along with passing health certifications (Dachshunds are very prone to back problems of course). Clear his health certifications, show him at AKC, UKC< or similar shows, to see how close he is to the ideal standard. THEN you can think about breeding him if he turns out to be a stellar example of the breed.

I believe miniature daschunds can be bred with squirrmunks.

Do you know how much "studding" hurts?

by suvoth on 21 April 2007 - 21:04

Sorry all...firstly I didn't realize this was a German Sheppard forum, and secondly I really know nothing of dog breeding, CK papers and shows and whatnot. I'm sorry I wasted your time because of my ignorance. I'll just get him snipped and be done with it. Thanks to those who tried to be helpful. Best of luck to everyone.
