The Sieger Show is here again.  Where will the Judges take the breed this year?  Will it be just more of the same?  Will they be brave and bring fresh blood to the breed?  Will they bring worthy working dogs to high places based on what they offer to the breed?

What do the readers think?  Ideas and suggestions invited.

I hope it's a great show with only top quality dog's without a hint of elbow and hip displacement in their line also I wish anyone caught breeding these dog's or any dog's that have it in their line to get a world wide ban from showing fined and dog's taken off them

I think that everyone would like to see a great show with top quality dogs, however, dysplasia has been aroiund for many years and every dog will have some degree in their bloodlines. Although we have seen improvements the problem still exists. The problem here is that there is more than one grade of dysplaysia which allows a pass for breeding purposes. When this system was introduced it was set up to have a grading system that allowed dogs with varying degrees of dysplasia so that breeders could continue to breed from their animals. All of this was because the gene pool was limited in numbers. Unfortunately, from time to time an owner/breeder has circumvented the system with a fake x-ray and this has misled breeders when choosing a male for their breeding program.

There are no dogs or lines in this breed that do not possess HD or ED in their genetics.
Also, I doubt seriously they will bring new genetics in winning positions, new dogs maybe, but not new genetics. So things will remain the same as I have been saying for past twenty years here.

When the gene pools are so limited it really creates more problems down the line...New bloodlines need to be welcomed and used when they offer wanted traits...

I think the protection phase is an embarrassment to the breed. The Sieger dogs have essentially become a separate breed.

The breed is certainly not the breed it was pre Herman Martin days. There is a decline in areas which weakens the breed as a working dog. Even the construction of the dogs makes them unfit for purpose and lacking in stamina. Too many males have made undesirably high places when they indicate poor workability traits.

The breed is not two breeds but will always be one - the German Shepherd Dog. The SV is high on words but lacks the integrity and drive needed to take the breed forward in a positive way.

A study in Finland showed that on a DNA level two subpopulations can be identified: the working line and the show line. We knew that without a study, but the fact the DNA is from two subpopulations says to me the two are at least different strains, and for practical purposes, to me they are essentially a different breed that look similar in some ways.

I hope Irina will post the videos and results again this year. I always enjoy watching what she puts together.
