BPH or Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy - Page 1

Hello! About 2 months ago I acquired a 3 YO male dog. He has the correct temperament and A stamp hips. Basically, all I want in a dog. However, he has BPH. I took him to the vet who automatically wanted to castrate him to alleviate the BPH,albeit, he said it is not painful for the male and other than the unsightly blood in the urine would not affect him.

If anyone, has ever had a dog with this condition. I would greatly appreciate any input as to what treatments worked or for that matter did not work. Also, is a male with this condition able to sire pups. Yes! I want one litter off this male. Than I’ll castrate and let him run and be free as he wills on my farm.

Following....my 6 year old was just diagnosed with this. All cultures so far are negative. He is on two different antibiotics for precaution. Depending on the next couple days for additional tests on urine cultures and prostatic fluids and I'm hoping to test sperm for blood. My vet said if there is blood in the sperm there is no reason to try and freeze it for future breedings.  Castration is recommended to stop future complications........Would love to see comments and advise!!

My dog was diagnosed with this condition last fall. At the time he was 8 yrs 9 mos old. He had been leaving bloody urine spots all over the tile floors of the house. The vet started him on antibiotics for a month and recommended neutering. My dog healed very well from the neuter and there have been no further problems. A follow up ultrasound showed that the previously enlarged prostate was now back to normal size. I can’t comment on whether your dog is still breed worthy given that he has this condition, but apparently BPH is common in intact middle aged dogs. I think it depends on how severe the problem is (how enlarged is the prostate) and whether we notice the problem because it is becoming severe. I couldn’t help noticing the bloody spots on the tile floors. My dog is now 9 1/2 years old and is in very good health, still fit and trim.

Some of the same issues as others. I did notice when his prostate was enlarged he would not jump, it hurt his back, too much pressure. Put him on the human drug Finasteride, (very cheap at Costco,) prostate shrunk, and neutered him at the age of 9. All good now, and he's pushing 11. He was around intact females on and off, and always had a flare up then. After neuter appetite went crazy for awhile, but returned to normal after a year or so.

I worked with a guy who's retired dog had same issue. From talking to his vet, sounded like he saw the problem several times with older with intact males. Received same treatment of Finasteride that Benzi mentioned. If I recall, he was much better after only a few months.
