noticed a lot of talk on another post about how dogs are pack animals. do you think it is a good idea for a Sch prospect to play or be around other dogs?

by EchoMeadows on 16 April 2007 - 23:04

Mine are !! This whole idea of isolating the dog or exhiling the dog to a solitary kennel with little to no interaction other than training time, has just rescently been widely introduced, some have liked the results while others clearly see the catastrophic damages. And when you stop and do some research and think it through it makes no sense to do such a thing. It serves absolutely NO purpose. The social structure is broken down if not completely eleviated, the bond between human and dog is severely compromised. the whole idea is proposterous.

Mine do have limited time with the dogs. I would still rather they bonded with me than with the other dogs in the household, especially when they are young and just started training. But yes, there are definitely days that I just don't have the energy and I let them wear each other out!

We have a limited few that spend limited time together. Only certain ones with certain others. Not all togther and not very long. At times it does get the excess off.

"We have a limited few that spend limited time together. Only certain ones with certain others. Not all togther and not very long." I hear you there. I have a couple of females that can't stand to be in the same county as the other much less in the same yard.

My dog plays with me, not other dogs. This is not a new concept!

Forgot to say this is how I have raised my last 5 GSDs and not one was neurotic.

Sue is right again. My dogs play with me, not other dogs. Someone said in another post about a dog getting dominated by another dog is not a big deal. It is a big deal to me. If you are training a dog to believe is unbeatable (just like training a fighter) Why on earth would you want that dog to be intimidated or dominated by another dog? I don't know any fighting instructors who put their fighters in with sparring partners who can beat them. It just doesn't make any sense. Whne you are training, does your decoy break the dog down, or do they always allow the dog to win? If you never lose, you believe you are unbeatable. Not to mention the chance of your dog becoming dog aggressive. I have a little bitch right now who carries aggression and takes things very seriously. One dog fight and she will be dog aggressive, not somehting I want to deal with. Dogs do not need other dogs if they have you. This whole pack mentality stuff is just way overboard. You and your dog can be a pack of two and he/she will be perfectly content and happy.

Oh, forgot to answer the question. Competition dogs should not play with other dogs. Will it help? NO. Will it hurt? Maybe not, but the possibilities are definitly there. Why take that chance?

I agree. My female only needs me not other dogs.
