ohannesburg - Top dog and cat food manufacturer Royal Canin has announced that it is recalling specific batches of all dog and cat dry food products manufactured under their labels.
The company released a statement on Monday morning after tests showed that a batch of raw material received by Royal Canin South Africa from a third party supplier may have been contaminated.
The company said it could not yet be sure what the contaminant was but that the public would be informed as soon as it had received more information.
Although all its products had not been contaminated, the company decided to organise a voluntary recall of all dog and cat dry food products manufactured under the Vets Choice and Royal Canin brands in South Africa manufactured between the period from 8th March 2007 to 11th April 2007.
The recall did not include products manufactured in South Africa before 8 March 2007 and products manufactured outside South Africa.
Pet owners were requested to check the date of manufacture and country of origin on the packs of all Royal Canin products in their possession and return recalled product to the vet from which it was purchased.
If owners had thrown away the bag and were unsure when their food was manufactured, they should rather not feed the food to their pets.
"Royal Canin want to prevent any further illness to pets, " said Barbara Bester on behalf of the company. She added that further tests were being carried out around the clock.
Concerned pet owners may contact dedicated consumer lines at 011 801 5002/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/63 or email info@royal-canin.co.za

Note: no wheat in this dog food, just brown rice.

I've been saying all along that the FDA never confirmed it was wheat gluten. They suspect it is. Just like rat poison and melamine. 1 lab confirms rat poison, other lab didn't. FDA says no rat poison, yet that's what it was at first. I STILL say they don't have a clue yet to what is going on.

thanks for the info... when is this going to stop??? My GSD is on "Natures Variety". He has been on it for about 2 weeks now...so far so good!

Does this include the rolled food? I do use this for tracking.
by Blitzen on 16 April 2007 - 22:04
No, only the dry venison and rice. I was feeding Blitz Nature's Variety Potato and Duck , decided to go with EVO and mixed a bag of each together. Although the potato and duck isn't on the recall list YET, I just spent an hour sifting out the EVO using a piepan with holes drilled in it LOL. I'm not feeding him any Nature's Variety right now. I'm also saving all my dog food bags just in case.
Horrible, isn't it? Raw feeding is looking better to me every day.

Blitzen, I agree.
Feeding RAW does sound better each time a new recall comes out.

This is unreal. I do not get why this is not a bigger issue in the news. Royal Canine, reduced calorie sold by vets was recomended by Jewel's Vet, trying to get the protien intake down for Jewel, because of the Kidney's. Mom brought by the the paper work from the vet, I had to call them and TELL them it is on recall, they are internal medicine and treating the sick. You would thing they would know. Plus in reaserching this I found out they put chemiclas in the reduced calorie food, and do not have to declare it. So you have no idea which one is safe or which ones stress the kidney's over the long haul.

I agree when is this going to stop. It makes me really concerned. I also use the Natural Balance rolls for tracking. I have been feeding a non grain food for a while and my dogs seem to be doing VERY good on it so far. Surprisingly I get my lamb and rice dog food Costco.
