Hello! I have a 4 1/2 month old male puppy with ears that still did not stand. Sometimes both ears stand but most of the time they're down. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I'm starting to worry. Tnx in advance

Chinito, I agree at that age they should be standing. I use a method of bracing ears that involves gluing forms inside the ears, and can be done in your home. If you will send me a private e-mail at derhundmeister@aol.com I will reply with the instructions and the templates. Bob-O

My pups are 6 months old and their ears are now staying up. Some puppies are done teething at an early age and some take longer, for example my West show/West working line girl didn't have her ears up until she was 8 months old, and now she is 9 1/2 years old, and their still up with no flopping around. Bob-O is right, you can glue them or wait and give them Knox gelatin that has hydrolyzed collogen and give him that with his food. You can get that pretty much anywhere. If your puppy is big boned then that means all the calcium is going to his bones and less to his ears, and you need to try and balance that out, with the Knox gelatin. If you would like more info on the Knox just email me privately. Good Luck!

If your pup's ears are coming up at all then not to worry they will eventually come up and stay up...It just depends on his growth...Be patient and don't worry...this is natural and all will be just fine in a short period of time...The hard part is to just wait...I also find that if you would just massage them once a day this helps in the blood circulation and will help in getting them to stay up...

Chinito, I returned an e-mail to you with the templates and instructions. I may add that the puppy needs to do vigourous chewing, as the muscles that work the lower jaw work together with the ones that pull up the ears. The issue is usually twofold-soft cartilidge and underused muscles. The suggestion of unflavoured gelatin is a good one, as the ear issue most often occurs when the puppy is making new teeth and heavy bones. Do not use the prepared calcium supplements, as they may do more harm than good. Some raw bones are good for chewing, as are hard rubber toys. As Bob Kress mentioned a gentle massage of each ear between the finger and thumb is a good daily regimen. I do that for the adults as well. I am not a big fan of bracing ears just to make them stand, and usually do it to correct one that is leaning-especially for those dogs that have long and heavy ears. Good luck, Bob-O

I've also heard you can use breathe-right strips in the ears.
