Dawn G. Bonome

by Dawn G. Bonome on 26 July 2009 - 23:07

I took Carla to Puppy Socialization Class aka Puppy Kindergarten, and the trainer, thoughtfully gave this to me due to the fact that I own a German Shepherd.
The name of the book is THE POPULAR ALSATIAN and the Author is J. Schwabacher. It is quite old and some of the Kennels that have ads in the book are,THE DUNKERQUE  KENNELS, THE DUNDAS KENNELS, Fischer's Alsatians of Wolfsmoor.

I think that this was published in the early 1920's. You can really see how the German Shepherd has evolved to what it is now.

Dawn, are there pictures you could show us?  That would be very interesting to see!

A very generous trainer.  If that book was published in 1924, it is a rare book worth $45 excluding shipping.
I found this link:   http://www.goantiques.com/scripts/images,id,1839655.html

That is the book. As I was glancing thru It emphatically states "It cannot be too trongly impressed upon the reader that the Alsatian is a WORKING DOG, and therefore must posess a body conforming to his requirements. The duties of him are: Hard, serious and reliable police work, sheep folding, Red Cross work, protection of master and property, leading the blind, etc, etc.It will be evident that he must be a dog of sufficient strength with well developed muscles, hard and capable of enduring any change of climatic conditions, not easily fatigued, and he should be possessed of a keen intellect.
It will also be evident that usefullness stands higher than beauty, although we shall find that real beauty, the perfection and nobility of this breed, lies in complete utility and the harmonius combination of the various parts of the body.

This was written so long ago, how did some breeders decide not to pay attention?

Was this book published in the UK? That's where the term Alsatian originated - because of the anti-German sentiment (which breeders were afraid would extend to German Shepherd Dogs) after WW1, the name was changed to make it sound as though the dog had originated in Alsace, France. I haven't seen or read this book, but I have seen "The German Shepherd Dog in Word and Picture" by Max von Stephanitz - an awesome read, by the founder of the breed. Lots of pictures of the early dogs and the type of work they were encouraged to engage in.  A bit pricey at $75, but you might be able to get it on E-bay for less.......Lots of people today don't pay any attention to Max either - they think they know better.
