Hey Everyone, I thought I'd ask what you guys use as flea and heart worm prevention specifically for your breeding dogs? I know of some nasty side effects from products like Bravecto and others, especially on the health of reproducing dogs and their puppies. I've been using frontline and Vectra 3d, I like frontline better. I don't particularly like using these chemicals on the dogs but I live in Texas and it's pretty much a flea's paradise. I've also just started using Diatomaceous Earth but I'm afraid that won't be enough to protect them when flea season really hits. As of right now I don't see fleas on the dogs.

I use Iverheart as heart worm prevention as well. I only administer frontline and iverheart during the hot seasons, and I stop both a month before breeding the female and until after she weans the pups, just as precaution. I was looking to see breeders use on this forum?

I live in northern Illinois so my flea and heartworm protocol is going to be different than yours but since you haven't had any replies thought I would answer.

I have never had a flea problem and do not use any sort of chemical prevention for fleas/ticks. If going into a tick area I use a natural preventative and then thoroughly check the dogs.

I give Heartgard every six weeks June through November. I do not give when pregnant or nursing.
