The working lines have 3 main divisions: Czech (which are mostly descended from DDR dogs) West German working line, and East German (D.D.R. or Deutsche Demokratische Republik) working lines.
The German show dogs are all descended from the same small group of ancestors, which includes Palme v. Wildsteiger Land. Quanto and Canto von der Weinerau, etc.

Can you tell me more about why a lot of GSD's have Von in front of their name or how I can look up what the German words mean?

'von' is the German word for 'from'. So, it means the dog is from such-and-such a kennel. The spelling of the word sometimes changes depending on the case of the kennel name (in German, nouns are either masculine, feminine or neuter.) So, that's why you sometimes see it as 'vom' instead of 'von'.
If the kennel name is masculine or neuter, it would be 'von dem [kennel name]. However, this is difficult to say, so it is shortened to 'vom [Kennel name]. If the kennel name is feminine, it's von den (Kennel name), which is a bit easier to pronounce, so it remains as written above.
And now you know why I quit German after 2 years...
Bing translator can be used to translate German, though it's much less than 100% accurate when it comes to dog terms.

Do you know what kennels are consider the best in the world right now?

by Sunsilver on 18 April 2018 - 19:04
lygsd, that all depends on what you are looking for in a dog!
Not going to offer an opinion on that. There is so much politics involved in the dog world, and the breed is divided into so many different 'lines', with each breeder thinking 'my type of dog is the BEST'!
Edit: the fact you'd ask that question tells me you have a great deal to learn about the GSD breed. Suggest you get some good books, or start hunting up information about the history of the breed online, and start reading!
Hanging out here and asking questions will help, too!
