A personal observation tail, oh I mean tale!
Back in the "olden" days, like the 70's, any teenage kid with a driver's license could drive down to the snarly part of town, walk the skid row of canine offenders, and say, I'll take that one! Yeah, my mom knows I'm getting a dog, she gave me the $20. That's all it cost back then! And the selection was great, what variety, ages, sizes. That's when we got Teddy, a gorgeous black GSD or Belgium shepherd. He absolutely ruled the neighborhood and leash laws were for cranky, rich, town people.
In the 80's we thought we were in love, and played house and just didn't feel complete without the pitter patter of little feet in our apartment. So you surprised me with a pup, you found a farmer and he had a litter in his backyard, and it only cost $100 bucks, but here he is, he's yours, and boy he is great! In the end, we split up and I got the cat and he got the dog. (This one was a yellow Lab)
In the 90's we got it right, and bought a house first, before we saw the ad from New Leash on LIfe. For only $50 bucks, you have a tax write-off to boot. That's when we found Ugly dog who lived past 14 yrs. He must have done over 2K in damage by the time he was done, lol, what a bargain! And we were seeing all these pitbull/mixes and the other variety of dogs were dwindling. It seems dogs needed to be imported from other states who planned on just killing them.
New Millenium, new rules, GSD rescue, had some pups, but first they needed to know a few things, like vet, and fence, and how old are those kids? They really got personal, had to promise to fix the little bugger to boot, and they offered me a rebate! The cost was up to $300 and my DH did have to drive 10 hrs to pick him up, but so glad to have a new puff of fluff! I didn't know about all this drive stuff then, just that the bites were getting harder and you better watch it with those kids. Patience, C.M., Obedience will get the job done, but we lost that one before his time.
So this time, still sad, but empty too, the petfinder was not as reliable for what we'd wanted anymore. We're getting too old, to risk a traumatized, aggressive, fearful, or sick dog, again. Where are these mean dogs coming from??? Get to know your breeder is great advice, but what if you don't have a breeder? Your boys need a dog now! So a click of the mouse, and mapquest in hand, off to the pet store just to see, but you take the checkbook in case. And oops, there he is, with that big ol' head and wonderful ears. One look and we know he needs out of that cage, and quess what it was his lucky day! He was rescued by us! and we paid cash! I LOVE MY PET GSD ;-)

I have not seen a gsd pup in a pet store in Years. I was hoping the breed was under their radar.
I am very happy for your pup and his new home..

Telling story. Too bad the pet store profited, but what counts in the end is you and that pup. Good luck.
