Puppy frequently going to bathroom - Page 1

My puppy the last couple of days has seemed to need to go out more and more to the bathroom than I am used to with any puppy. Normally I'd expect a two month old pup to at least hold it an hour when not in the crate. I expect to take them out when they wake up, after they eat, after they've had a decent amount to drink ...... But In the last 30 minutes(he did have some to drink) he went to the bathroom 6 times in the house. I always try to keep him in my vision if he's running loose, but he snuck away for a matter of seconds a few times, and then when I went over to where he was, saw even more spots where he went. He went two more times outside in that time frame. That can't be normal, which, leads me to think something may be up with his bladder. Has anyone experienced anything like this before after a pup has something to drink? I've never had this type of difficulty in potty training a pup.

I should add ..... it only seems to happen after having water; At night I cut off water at 8 pm.... Only have to take him out once in the middle of the night, and he seems to hold it well in the crate.

What kibble are you feeding some of them will cause them to be more thirsty. High in salt and ash.

The fact that he can hold it seems to me to rule out a bladder or UTI problem

Could he be hungry and do what I do, drink more to feel full. Feed more often may help.

His food may not be meeting all his needs and he is using water instead.

Is he bored and it is something to do.

Interesting. And I did think it odd he would hold it so long in the crate, but not when loose. He is on FROMM large breed puppy(not grain free). The breeder had him on IAMS.

He has been with me almost 2 weeks now.

I don't feed kibble to my adults, puppies get raw and some kibble if they are going to new homes that don't feed raw and the is Eukanuba.  I do not endorse this food it just helps puppies to have goods stools when under the stress of going to a new home.

We do have members here that know more about those two foods.

Might mix the Iams with the Fromm for a little while see if that helps.

Alright. Honestly the days we did more training(he had treats through the day as well as his meals) he seemed to be urinating less now that I think about it(and thinking back to your first comment). Yesterday and today we didn't do much in the way of training at all and they have been the worst days.

Guy, it seems you have enough ideas^^ now to get on top of this, but can I just make a suggestion about what has been happening, that might help you prevent repeats ? If he was waiting until he got out of his crate, but then not waiting until you took him outside, you really need to make sure the spots he chose indoors to wee on get thoroughly cleaned and de-
scented. Scrub all of these with a, non-bio, soap mix. Even if it was just a couple of spots of urine. They are really good at finding places they have 'marked' !

I agree with Hundmutter, de-scenting may help a bit.

But sometimes pups can pick up some bladder problems like a UTI, or bladder stones which may cause a burning sensation when they pee or make them feel as they need to go more often.

Have you noticed normal amount urine when he pees or is it small amount? Normal color? Foul Odor or pain when urinating? Excessive drinking?

ShirosOhana...... Typically it's clear, odorless .... which(not to be gross) is what is common with people when drinking more and more water.

To the other responses(Western Rider), this morning we've been rock solid; He did fine overnight(as usual); And he's eaten his 1st meal early, did some training later(which involves more food of course), and around 1 I will do a second meal. I am so used to feeding pups 3 times a day until 12 weeks(he is 10 weeks today), but the breeder had only been doing two meals a day so I had been going with that. We've played some this morning as well, and him with one of the other Shepherds, and now....they're both out asleep while I'm doing my work here at the house.
