Just to let you know (as if anybody might read this!) that I am adding a large number of dogs to the poodle pedigree database. Since the database has so few entries, this means a lot of work which will take many days, if I ever get it done...

Anyway, because the pedigrees are incomplete for many generations, and because I am working back in time from recent dogs, I will be adding many entries which may be incomplete. This is not because I am lazy, but because it is easier to make the entries first and then fill out the information later, and some information (sire and dam) requires yet more entries be made. I am taking the information from whatever sources I have available, from official records to user-created databases, and so I cannot guarantee the accuracy, but I am doing my best. Note that in many cases the official records contain misspellings and typos, and so also may the unofficial records. I don’t correct anything, even if it appears obvious, unless I know for a fact what the official records say.

I'm sorry. but that is the wrong approach. If you can not enter something that is correct, it is better to not enter it at all.
It is better to take you time and verify each spelling using the AKC database, look up the name and include the date of birth and registration number.  You have entered about 50 dogs with only a name.
One problem with your approach is that if you enter them, and then find out the name is wrong.  YOU CAN NOT CORRECT THE NAME. An admin has to correct it.
If the dogs are not AKC registered, and you are not positive of the name..... just do not enter them.
I already sent you a PM about entering all the dogs with names only. That does not make a good database.
If this is the way that you are going to be entering dogs, you must stop.  Go back and check the dogs that you already entered and fill in the information.  Make a list of the incorrect names and send them to me.
We are happy to have you add to the poodle database, but only if it is the correct information.

Sorry, maybe I wasn’t that clear in my post. I’m not leaving the entries without completing the information, but I have been adding names in groups and then going back and adding in all the other information, normally the same day. If you say that’s not the best way, then I’ll do it one entry at a time. As for the names, my sources are pretty accurate, but if I can confirm it from official records, I will from now on.

Examples of name issues:
Chri's Majestic River Nile and Chris' Majestic Sydney Egypt: Same kennel name, but the apostrophe is in different places. I made no changes.
Annagars Mark Anthoney and Annacars Snickers: one of these is probably a misspelled kennel name, c instead of g or vice-versa. Again, no changes.
Salena's Last Tango and Salena's Ginger Dances On Air: The second entry was written Salena"S Ginger Dances On Air (with double quotes instead of apostrophe and capital S) in the AKC records, an obvious typo. Should I request that the name be changed to match the typo in the record?

Here I might add that I have looked around the site for instructions on how to add entries and info to the database, but I find precious little. I’m willing to help and want to do it right, but I’m kind of guessing on how to go about it. If you could point me towards anything I might have missed, please do! Thanks.

I'll contact you privately tomorrow and we can talk about how best to help. There really is no site for instructions except for our rules.

http://http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/community.read?post=888920-rules-and-guidelines-for-registering-a-dogpuppy

Meanwhile, if you could add all the info that you have to the dogs that you have already added, then I can see how much info you have.

Do you know how to use the AKC database and the OFA database for information?

Kennels spell their names different ways, or owners spell them differently. Sometimes it may be Chris's or Chris', but even though we know that AKC makes mistakes, we use the spelling that is listed in AKC online.  So Annagars Mark Anthoney and Annacars Snickers are both correct as that is the way that AKC has them and since they are AKC registered, that is what we use.

However, PDB does not handle double quotes, and so though AKC has the name as Salena"S Ginger Dances On Air , PDB has to show it as Salena's Ginger Dances On Air. Thus it is correct as you entered it.

We have had storms in our area and I lost my electricity. I have gotten no sleep for 2 days because I use a CPAP machine and without electricity, it does not work (I just purchased a backup battery), but I have been very tired and thus quite irritable.  I apologise if my reply came across that way.  Let me get a good nights sleep. If you have any specific questions, please send them to me privately.

I understand the sleepless thing, I'm not offended. Thanks for the link to the guidelines.

Oops! Just before I read your reply, I checked and found that I can change the name on dogs I've entered, and changed that entry to Salena"S Ginger Dances On Air... I can change it back if necessary, but a good system will filter out characters that interfere, so I assume this works. If not, change it back.

I did see the guidelines post before. One thing I wondered about, it seems to require the sire/dam fields be filled in. However, if I fill those in, this creates new entries, which I then need to confirm and add the registration numbers, whelping date, and... sire and dam, which then creates new entries... in other words, I can’t comply unless I can enter most of a very large pedigree in an instant, which unfortunately I cannot do, not having super powers! So I hope it is acceptable to leave sire and dam blank until I have time to return and add those entries.

You can't see the problem with having it as Salena"S Ginger Dances On Air unless you
edit her pedigree. now look at the name. It only says Salena
In order to keep the full name once you edit the dog, you can not use the "
Please change it back to Salena's Ginger Dances On Air.

It does not require the sire dam names to be filled in, only for dogs with no progeny.

You need to develop a rhythm as to how to enter the dogs. I do it this way. Check the dogs name in AKC, copy it and use that to enter the initial name. Then since you have the info pulled up in AKC, enter DOB and reg number. I usually follow the sires side for a couple of dogs, that way I don't have to go back and forth.
Like this.
Look up dog in AKC and get info,
Enter dog and info in PDB
look up sire in AKC
Enter sire and info in PDB
stay there, click on sire's name
Look up sire's sire in PDB
Enter sire's sire and info in PDB

Then use back arrow on browser and go back and look up dam
and do the same thing. Just remember to keep looking to verify the dogs name that you are working on.

Maybe to start you should just do sire and dam.

Sounds confusing, but you don't have to move around that much and it allows you to add all the correct data with a minimum of effort. Always go back to original dog and refresh screen and verify pedigree.
Or do it your way, but don't add 50 dogs before entering data. keep it to around 10, or as many as you think you will have time to finish or some admin is going to catch it and send you a pm.

Not confusing at all. I will try it that way and see how it goes. And I hadn’t realized how many I was adding at once until I went back to complete them and was almost overwhelmed! I changed the entry for Salena"S... to Salena's... so it works properly now. I did catch a couple errors while verifying names last night, so I see the value of the verification process and will continue to do so. I will go back and verify the others I have entered too, as I have time. I’ve been entering the variety (standard, miniature, toy) in the “General info about the dog” area. Seems like there ought to be a special place to enter that along with the rest of the basic dog info. Also, why isn’t the color showing up anywhere but the editing screen? I noticed some poodles display the color, but none of the ones I’ve entered do.

There is no place to display color. We have had this request, but again Oli the owner has to do that, and at this time he can not make any programming
changes.
