I'm a new member, and I need to pick your collective brains. I grew up with a wonderful GSD in the 1970's, and am trying to research the breeder. Unfortunately, I cannot locate his papers. They are somewhere in my house, which is currently in a state of chaos (translate: they have been lost for the past 5 years, and are likely never to be seen again). His registered name was Toro of Ram. A search of the GSD Database Project shows only one animal with that same suffix, one "Count Kim of Ram," with no contact info or name for the breeder, nor any descendants. Do any of you have a familiarity with the "of ram" lineage or where they have gone with the current lines? Even their history would be of interest. I plan an addition to my family in the not too distant future, and would love to find a relative of his. Thank you for any info you can offer.

AKC has a research feature on their website..
You can lookup a dog either by its name or reg number..

After you have that info, you can order a research pedigree, which will tell you information on the dog, its breeder/owner, titles, etc..

Dog you had is listed as :

WB623914

Toro Of Ram CD
German Shepherd Dog

That is your dog's AKC reg number from the 1970's, its reg name, and it earned a CD

You can now go buy the research pedigree, which will tell you more info.

After you do that, enter the pedigree here..  if you like..

There's exactly zero GSDs listed in the OFA database with the 'of Ram' suffix, which makes me inclined to think that the breeder was likely more of a pet dog breeder than a purposeful breeder. A serious breeder would most likely have had their dogs' hips certified by OFA.

That doesn't negate your dog having been a terrific dogs--I've known a lot of dogs that were clearly pet-bred in origin that were or are fabulous dogs, but they aren't dogs that would be considered worthy of being breeding stock for various reasons.

There's also the rather remote chance that the breeder was using German imports which had their hips certified by the SV in Germany, but I'd be astonished if this were the case, given the time period involved and the fact that there doesn't seem to be any trace of this kennel name out on the web.
